District court in Hampton covers misdemeanors; circuit court there hears felonies. More on the Calhoun court page.

Bond choices

Pay the full bond at the jail or hire a licensed bondsman, who keeps up to ten percent. Call first for the amount. See Calhoun bail.

Public defender

Calhoun County cases fall in a judicial district that shares a public defender office across several south Arkansas counties. The Hampton judge reviews the person's income and debts before appointing one. Ask the judge at the first appearance if money for a lawyer is a problem.

Back to questions ↑

Visits in Hampton

Hampton's jail is small and visit days are tied to staffing, so a phone call the day before saves a wasted drive down Highway 167. Visits are about 30 minutes and need a photo ID. Call to learn the days. See visitation and remote visits.

Calls and tablets

A Hampton inmate's calls go out only after a relative funds a prepaid account; collect calls may also be allowed at a higher price. Tablets and messages, where offered, are paid the same way. Prepaid accounts let them call out. See phones, messaging and tablets.

Money

Calhoun County inmates use money on their books for snacks, toiletries, stamps and phone time. Ask the Hampton jail whether deposits are taken at the front desk, by phone or online. Fund their account for commissary. See deposits and commissary.

Letters

Calhoun County mail is opened and checked for contraband before delivery, so skip stickers, glitter, perfume and cash. Plain letters and photos without anything attached are safest. Full name on the envelope, then the jail's Hampton address. Read mail rules.

Which court takes federal cases from Calhoun County?

IRS agents, the Secret Service, and the FBI make federal arrests. Cases out of Hampton are heard in the El Dorado Division (Western District of Arkansas), at the courthouse in El Dorado: 101 South Jackson Avenue, Room 205, El Dorado, AR 71730. With questions, call the clerk at 833-853-0345. An initial appearance is held quickly with a U.S. magistrate judge. Ahead of court, a pretrial officer checks ties to the community and prior record. There is no set bail price in federal court. A bail hearing settles release or detention, applying the federal Bail Reform Act.

Check the sheriff's jail list; there the hold can be listed. The Marshals Service office that serves the Western District sits at 30 South 6th Street, Room 243, Fort Smith, AR 72901. Phone 479-289-7470 and 479-424-5000 (you can call either) to learn the location of the person. Until sentencing, U.S. Marshals often place them in a county jail. Following sentencing to prison, a prisoner transfers into federal prison (the BOP). Find them through the BOP locator by name.

How will an ICE hold work here?

  • Booking fingerprints get compared with national records that ICE can see. ICE may then file a detainer.
  • A paid bond won't clear an ICE hold.
  • A 48-hour limit applies: ICE's request just asks the Hampton jail to delay the release. A weekend day won't stop the clock.
  • Within the hold, ICE can send officers to collect them. Without an ICE pickup, this should mean the person goes free.
  • Their next facility depends on ICE.
  • Arkansas reports to ICE's New Orleans field office: 181 James Drive W, St. Rose, LA 70087, 504-318-2360.
  • To see which center holds them, pull up the ICE locator and type in the A-number on ICE papers with their birth country. If the A-number is unknown, type in DOB, home country and both first and last names.

Sentenced to state prison: the next steps

Prison sentences are served by the ADC. They wait in the Hampton jail for a state transfer. The ride ends at intake, where they are booked into the system. At intake, the ADC checks medical and mental health needs, gang connections and their risk level. The last step is a unit that matches their rating.

Families can find an ADC inmate by ADC number on the Division of Correction search. Our Arkansas prison page explains every state unit.

Can I find Calhoun County jail mugshots online?

Yes. Calhoun mugshots come up with each booking in the Calhoun inmate roster. Not every Calhoun entry has a photo yet.

If a jail photo is missing from the web, newsroom requests go through the sheriff's office at 870-798-2323. The press and families don't get federal mugshots. Exceptions are few. The Marshals can post a booking photo for a wanted fugitive, if there is an urgent safety need, or when release could help find them or alert neighbors. Want an ICE mugshot? File ICE's FOIA form, then wait for approval.
