Crawford County bail and bond: paying at the Alma Highway jail versus the downtown Van Buren offices

The Crawford County Detention Center is inside the Crawford County Justice Center at 4235 Alma Highway, Van Buren, run by the sheriff's office. Van Buren, Alma and the smaller towns all book adults there. The court offices are downtown, not at the jail, so know which counter you need. This page covers bond, payment, bondsmen, court dates and refunds.

Check custody first with the Crawford County Sheriff's official inmate search. Our Crawford County Inmate Search page covers the rest of an arrest: who is in custody, charges, holds, visits and getting a public defender. Bond amounts appear once a judge sets them.

Your first step is a call to the detention desk at 479-474-1721; the sheriff's main line is 479-474-2261. Ask for the booking number and the bond on each charge. The circuit clerk answers at 479-474-1821. Hearing steps are on our Crawford County court guide.

1. The person was just arrested. What do I do in the first hour?

Check the inmate search linked above, then call the detention desk at 479-474-1721 and give the person's legal name plus birth date. Booking at a jail this size can take a few hours, so a missing name may only mean paperwork is still moving. Write down the booking number and charges, and find out if a bond amount has been entered. Do not drive out to Alma Highway with money until someone has confirmed the amount and the payment types.

2. How is the bond amount decided in Crawford County?

A judge sets it, usually at the first appearance. Under Rule 8.1 a jailed person sees a judge quickly, usually two or three days at most. In weighing the amount, Rule 9.2 has the judge look at the offense, prior convictions, local roots and past no-shows. Rule 9.3 lets the judge add conditions or skip money altogether. Ask the detention desk whether a preset figure already exists for the charge; deputies cannot raise or lower it.

3. Where is the bonding window, and what does it take?

At the Justice Center, 4235 Alma Highway, which operates around the clock. Exact cash, cashier's checks and money orders work at the Justice Center, but personal checks don't. Whether a card can be used, and at what fee, changes with the equipment on hand, so ask at 479-474-1721 before you go. The jail's bail instructions give the same advice. Carry ID and hold on to the bond slip, which shows the case number.

↑ Back to the question list

4. Can the court clerk take the bond instead?

Sometimes, once the case has reached a court. The circuit clerk's office at 317 Main Street, 479-474-1821, handles felony files; the district court clerk in Van Buren is at 301 Mount Vista Boulevard, 479-474-1671. Both close at the end of the business day, so a weekend bond still goes through the jail. Phone first to learn whether the jail or a clerk has this bond, then pick your destination.

↑ Back to the question list

5. What will a Van Buren bondsman charge me?

A flat 10% of the bond, taken up to the next $5, as Arkansas Code 17-19-301 sets it, plus a $10 state board fee and a $15 processing fee. On a $3,000 bond that is $300 plus $25, and none of it comes back. Any agent should show a current license from the state's Professional Bail Bond Company and Professional Bail Bondsman Licensing Board. Expect a request for a cosigner or collateral, and extra charges if the person has to be found.

6. Will the court accept land or a house?

Arkansas Code 16-84-103 lets a state resident pledge visible property whose net value, after debts and exemptions, at least equals the bond, if the sheriff signs a sworn property statement for the court to review. Whether the judge on a given Crawford County case will take real estate instead of cash, and whether land across the river in Oklahoma or in another county qualifies, is for that judge to decide. Ask the circuit clerk at 479-474-1821 what paperwork the judge wants and bring the deed and current tax statement.

7. Van Buren, Alma, Mulberry, or Mountainburg: which district court?

Crawford County District Court has four departments. Van Buren and Mountainburg are served from 301 Mount Vista Boulevard, 479-474-1671. The Alma department's clerk is at 804 Fayetteville Avenue, 479-632-4170. The Mulberry department answers 479-997-1321. The department follows the town whose officer wrote the charge. Misdemeanors, traffic cases, and felony first appearances begin here.

↑ Back to the question list

8. Which circuit court division has a felony case?

Crawford County forms its own 21st Judicial Circuit with two divisions. Division I answers 479-474-6332 and Division II 479-471-3290; the circuit clerk at 479-474-1821 knows which division has the file and the upcoming hearing date. The prosecutor's office is at 479-474-5000. Motions to lower bond are filed in the division that has the case.

↑ Back to the question list

9. Does it matter that Van Buren or Alma police made the arrest?

Only for who holds the report. Both departments deliver adults to the county Justice Center. Van Buren Police are at 111 South 11th Street, 479-474-1234; Alma Police at 804 Fayetteville Avenue, 479-632-3333. Officers from Mulberry, Mountainburg, Cedarville, Kibler, and Dyer do the same. If a department says the person is being held at its station, ask how long and when transport to the county happens.

↑ Back to the question list

10. Can the jail release someone without bond?

Rarely on its own. Arkansas Rule 5.2 lets an officer issue a citation instead of holding a person, but jails generally reserve that for minor offenses or emergencies. Even so, release on recognizance or on conditions is still open to the judge. Steady work, a fixed Crawford County address and a clean appearance record should all reach the judge through the lawyer at the first appearance.

↑ Back to the question list

11. What does "no bond" on a Crawford County record mean?

Three reasons. The judge has not yet seen the charge; the charge is capital, which the Arkansas Constitution lets a court hold without bail when the proof is evident; or a hold is attached. Holds come from parole or probation officers, other counties or states with warrants, immigration, or a judge's detention order after a fresh felony charge during an open felony case. The detention desk at 479-474-1721 can say which it is.

12. Where is the public defender's office?

At 206 South 3rd Street in Van Buren, 479-471-3270. It serves Crawford County alone as the 21st Judicial District office. Appointment happens in court, after the person fills out a sworn statement of income at the first appearance. Appointed counsel can seek a lower figure, and paychecks, a rental agreement and local family names give that request weight.

13. Where does an arrested teenager go?

A person under 18 is not booked into the adult jail and no bond schedule applies. The juvenile division of circuit court decides at a detention hearing whether the child returns home or stays locked up; with no youth center of its own, the county drives detained youths to one in a neighboring county. The circuit clerk's office at 479-474-1821 keeps juvenile files and can connect you to the juvenile officer who can share the youth's location and hearing time. Juvenile records are confidential.

14. Will a deposit to an inmate's account free them?

It doesn't. Deposits for video visits, commissary, phone time and messages all stay inside the inmate's account. They buy calls, food, and tablet time and never reach the court. A bond is paid separately at the Justice Center window or to the clerk and gets its own receipt.

↑ Back to the question list

15. My relative missed a Van Buren hearing. Now what?

The court issues a warrant, tacks on a failure-to-appear charge, and starts to forfeit the bond. State law gives the surety time to return the person before forfeiture becomes final, so act that day: ring the clerk for the court where the date was missed, ask about a new one, and reach a lawyer. Bondsmen who go looking for a missing defendant send the bill to the cosigner.

↑ Back to the question list

16. Will the court return the money?

Cash bond comes back when the case closes with every hearing attended, minus any fines, costs, and restitution the judge orders. Whoever's name is on the receipt gets the check, so put your own name down if it's your cash. Bondsman premiums and card fees are not returned. The clerk who handled the case can say when the refund goes out and by what method.

17. How do bail scammers target Crawford County families?

Someone you don't know wants gift cards, wired cash or an app transfer to get your relative out. Bond is taken in person at the Justice Center or a clerk's office, and licensed bondsmen charge a fixed 10 percent. Hang up and dial 479-474-2261 yourself.

18. Which Crawford County court has the case, and where are its offices?

Court offices are downtown in Van Buren, away from the Justice Center. District court also has departments in Alma and Mulberry:

  • Crawford County Circuit Court (felonies, juvenile division, appeals), circuit clerk: 317 Main Street, Van Buren, AR 72956 · 479-474-1821

19. Where does a federal charge from Crawford County go?

Fort Smith, just across the Arkansas River. A federal bond is set by a federal judge, not by the Alma Highway jail, and county bondsmen can't post it. Crawford County belongs to the Fort Smith Division of the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Arkansas, located at the federal building in Fort Smith, 30 South 6th Street, Fort Smith, AR 72901, 833-853-0345. Most cases follow these steps:

  • An agency like the DEA, FBI, ATF or Homeland Security Investigations files a complaint, or a grand jury indicts.
  • The first appearance is before a U.S. magistrate judge in Fort Smith.
  • A Pretrial Services officer looks into the person's work, home and record.
  • If the government asks for detention, the judge holds a hearing a few days later.
  • Anyone freed has to follow set rules, such as reporting in and staying in the district.

The U.S. Marshals, whose Western District office is also in Fort Smith, choose the jail for federal defendants before trial. Call U.S. Marshals Service, 30 South 6th Street, Fort Smith, AR 72901, 479-289-7470 or 479-424-5000 (call either).

20. Can ICE pick someone up after the Crawford County bond is posted?

It can. A detainer under 8 CFR 287.7 asks the Justice Center to notify ICE before release and to hold the person up to 48 hours longer, counting weekends and holidays. Arkansas law has no rule against the jail honoring it.

Van Buren charges continue while ICE holds the person, and a missed date there still triggers a warrant. The ICE New Orleans Field Office, 181 James Drive W, St. Rose, LA 70087, 504-318-2360 handles ICE matters in Arkansas. Detainees from western Arkansas often end up in Louisiana, for example:

  • LaSalle ICE Processing Center: 830 Pinehill Road, Jena, LA 71342 · 318-992-1600
  • Pine Prairie ICE Processing Center: 1133 Hampton Dupre Road, Pine Prairie, LA 70576 · 337-599-2400

Look up the person in the ICE Online Detainee Locator System (https://locator.ice.gov/odls/) by A-number and birth country, or by complete name plus birthplace country.

21. How do I find a Crawford County inmate who was moved?

After booking on Alma Highway, a prisoner might be shifted to a jail in some other county, a state unit or a federal hold. Check each of these:

  • Crawford County jail: Crawford County Inmate Search. Enter the last and first name, then pick the booking to view charges, date and bond.
  • VINE: VINELink (https://vinelink.vineapps.com/). Select Arkansas and search the name. VINE tells you if the person is locked up and at what facility, and can send free release alerts by phone or text.
  • Federal Bureau of Prisons: Federal Bureau of Prisons Inmate Locator (https://www.bop.gov/inmateloc/). Try a register number first, or fill in name, race, sex and age. Federal detainees awaiting trial may not appear, so ask the Marshals at 479-289-7470 or 479-424-5000 (call either).
  • Arkansas Division of Correction: Arkansas Division of Correction Inmate Search (https://apps.ark.org/inmate_info/). An inmate number or family name returns the prison, a photo and parole timing.

22. Which Van Buren offices should I call to double-check the bond and court date?

Payment rules and office hours shift, so call before carrying money anywhere. Start with the detention desk, 479-474-1721, for custody status, the full amount due and accepted payment. Felony dates are kept by the circuit clerk, 479-474-1821. For misdemeanor dates, call the Van Buren district clerk at 479-474-1671, Alma at 479-632-4170 or Mulberry at 479-997-1321.
