With a licensed capacity of 39 inmates, the Izard County Detention Center is often forced to make room for many more offenders, especially on weekends. Most city and county jails in Arkansas turn over at least 40% of their population every month. Another 30% turns over every 90 days and another 20% every six months, while about 8-9% stay between six and twelve months. Inmates held longer than twelve months are generally facing serious charges like rape or murder. Because those cases take longer to prepare for trial, offenders arrested in Izard County stay in custody at one of the Izard County facilities much longer.
The only charges for which bail can be denied in Arkansas are capital offenses where the proof is evident or the presumption is great. For all other offenses, Izard County judges may release a defendant on their own recognizance, set conditions of release, or set bail.
Each year, Izard County law enforcement agencies arrest and detain approximately 780 offenders.
Izard County’s jail shares a building with the county’s 911 dispatch center at 300 Circle Drive in Melbourne, AR 72556. The Izard County Sheriff’s Office opened the combined detention and dispatch facility in 2003, and it has earned strong ratings from the state’s Criminal Detention Facilities Review Board. The jail is small: it holds up to 34 regular inmates plus four state inmates housed under Arkansas’s Act 309 program. Men and women are housed separately, and people charged with violent offenses are kept apart from those with nonviolent charges. The main number is (870) 368-4203.
The sheriff’s roster at izardcountysheriff.org/roster-choose lets you view everyone currently held or anyone released in the last 48 hours. The sheriff’s most wanted list is on the same website.
Visiting here takes a phone call in advance. Visits happen on Sundays only, between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m., by appointment, and you must call (870) 368-4203 by 5 p.m. Wednesday to get on that week’s schedule. Each person in custody gets one 15-minute visit with up to four visitors, and everyone must show a valid picture ID. Dress modestly. Short remote video visits through City Tele Coin are another option; you can set up an account at citytelecoin.com. There’s no public bus in the area, so plan to drive.
Anyone arrested in the county is booked here and must see a judge without unnecessary delay, generally within 48 hours (Arkansas Rule of Criminal Procedure 8.1). The Arkansas Constitution (art. 2, §8) makes every charge bailable before conviction except a capital offense when the proof is evident or the presumption great, and Rules 9.1–9.2 direct judges to consider release on recognizance or conditions before setting money bail. If you hire a bondsman, Arkansas Code §17-19-301 sets the premium at 10% of the bond (rounded up to the nearest $5), due in full before release, plus small nonrefundable state fees. Call the jail for a bond amount. Search ARCourts at caseinfo.arcourts.gov/opad shows case information and court dates. If you believe you have a warrant, contact the sheriff’s office or an attorney before turning yourself in.
Melbourne is a small town, but you’ll find gas, snacks and hot food at the Exxon at 790 E. Main Street. Sonic Drive-In is just down the road at 654 E. Main Street, and Johnson’s Country Cookin’ at 745 E. Main Street serves breakfast, lunch and dinner every day.
Send letters to the person’s full name and inmate ID number, Izard County Jail, 300 Circle Drive, Melbourne, AR 72556. Money for commissary is deposited through CommissaryDeposit.com, with a $260 maximum per deposit; fees run about $3.25 to $7.50 plus 3%, depending on the amount. Phones and tablets come from City Tele Coin. For questions about property or release, call the jail.

There are two options for putting money on an inmate's books:
Choice 1 - Deposit Inmate Money Online
Izard County Detention Center uses CommissaryDeposit.com to process all online deposits to an inmate's account. The company charges you a small fee for doing so, but the fee probably isn't as much as gas and parking would cost to take it to the jail in person.
Choice 2 - Mail the Inmate Deposit to the Jail
Mailing a deposit takes more time to process than the other methods but can be done if you live too far away to bring it in person and you don't have a debit/credit card for online deposits. Never send cash. Always send a Money Order from the US Post Office, a reputable bank or Western Union.
Make the Money Order out to the inmate's name and put their Inmate ID# in memo section of the Money Order.
**Call 870-368-4203 first to ask Izard County Detention Center if this option is still available.
