Inmates who stay longer than a year are usually charged with serious crimes like murder or rape. Those cases take a long time to prepare for trial, so offenders arrested in Little River County for them stay in one of the Little River County facilities much longer.

For years, Little River County’s downtown jail in Ashdown could hold only 24 people, and Sheriff Bobby Walraven sometimes had prisoners spread across as many as seven other counties. That changed in March 2023, when the county opened the Little River County Detention Center on U.S. Highway 71 on the north side of Ashdown, paid for with an $8.5 million voter-approved bond and sales tax. The new jail holds about 80 people, with a kitchen, laundry, medical room and segregation cells, and its 20-acre site leaves room to grow. It is run by the Little River County Sheriff’s Office at 2115 N. Constitution Avenue, Ashdown, AR 71822; call (870) 898-5115. Office hours are 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.

The detention center holds people awaiting court on local charges, people serving county sentences, and people sentenced to the Arkansas Division of Correction who are waiting to be transferred. After booking, Arkansas Rule of Criminal Procedure 8.1 requires a first appearance before a judge without unnecessary delay, generally within 48 hours of arrest. Little River County is in the Ninth Judicial Circuit–West, together with Howard, Pike and Sevier counties.

Under Article 2, Section 8 of the Arkansas Constitution, everyone is bailable before conviction except for capital offenses when the proof is evident or the presumption great. Rules 9.1 and 9.2 tell the judge to consider release on recognizance or with conditions, and to use money bail only when nothing else will reasonably ensure the person returns to court. Bail can generally be paid in cash, by credit card or by money order; call the jail to confirm before you go. A bondsman’s premium is set by Arkansas Code §17-19-301 at 10% of the bond, rounded up to the nearest $5, due in full before release, plus small state-required nonrefundable fees. Court records are on Search ARCourts at caseinfo.arcourts.gov/opad. If you think you have a warrant, contact the sheriff’s office or an attorney before turning yourself in.

Call the sheriff’s office to check whether someone is in custody and to confirm current visiting times. Video visits are set up through JailATM: register an account, add Little River Detention Center, and then add the person you want to see. Visitors need a valid photo ID, and anyone under 17 must come with an authorized adult. Phone accounts are handled by Correct Solutions Group ((877) 618-3516).

Address letters to the person’s full name and inmate ID number, Little River County Jail, 2115 N. Constitution Avenue, Ashdown, AR 71822. Use blue or black ink, and have paperback books shipped directly from a retailer; hardcovers are refused. Money for commissary can be added online through Tiger Commissary, at the kiosk, or by money order through the mail.

There is no public bus in Ashdown, so most visitors drive. For fuel, try E-Z Mart at 1040 N. Constitution Ave. or the Exxon at 950 S. Constitution Ave. Sonic Drive-In at 990 S. Constitution Ave. and McDonald’s at 1260 S. Constitution Ave. are easy stops for food.

  • Medical and mental health assessment, as well as inquiries about substance use.
  • Possibly collecting DNA samples.
  • Performing a full-body search.

Paying bail for someone in custody in Little River County

Once someone is booked at Little River Detention Center in Ashdown after an arrest, there are several outcomes:

1. They may be released without paying bail, agreeing to show up on a scheduled date.
2. They may remain in custody until their court appearance.
3. They can pay a bail or bond for release. Call 870-898-5115 for bail details.

Bail payments can take several forms.

  • The full cash bond is paid at the jail's bonding window or at the clerk of court using cash, a cashier's check or a money order, while many jails add a card option at a lobby kiosk or through an online bond service for a fee; bring the inmate's full name and booking number, and call the jail at 870-898-5115 with questions.
  • A licensed bail bond agent in Little River County can help cover bail.
  • Many courts take real estate as security for a bond; the property owner must show clear title plus equity at least equal to the bond, often twice it, backed by a deed and a recent tax or appraisal value, and the court that set the bail gives final approval.

How Do You Deposit Money for an Inmate in the Little River Detention Center?

There are three choices for putting money on an inmate's books:

Choice 1 - Dropping Money at the Jail

Ask the jail whether it takes deposits in person before you go.

Call Little River Detention Center to ask whether it has a Tiger kiosk for cash or card deposits, and where it is.

If you can't get your questions answered online call the Little River Detention Center at 870-898-5115.

Choice 2 - Deposit Inmate Money Online

Tiger Commissary's online site lists the services set up for each jail, such as commissary orders or deposits.

Go to Tiger's online site, pick the state and the jail, and see which services it offers there.

Choice 3 - Mail the Inmate Deposit to the Jail

Mailing a deposit takes more time to process than the other methods but can be done if you live too far away to bring it in person and you don't have a debit/credit card for online deposits. Never send cash. Always send a Money Order from the US Post Office, a reputable bank or Western Union.

Call Little River Detention Center at 870-898-5115 to confirm the address to send the money order to and how they want it made out.

Failure to do this properly will delay your inmate getting his account credited and may require you to have to resubmit a second money order.

Call 870-898-5115 to ask facility personnel who to make the money order out to, and where to send it.
