What should families expect after a federal arrest in Jasper?

Officers from Homeland Security Investigations, the DEA, the FBI, and the U.S. Marshals make federal arrests, sometimes alongside deputies. Federal law places this county with the Harrison Division (Western District of Arkansas). The court lists no Harrison office on the court's site, even though federal law says the division meets in Harrison. Ask the clerk at 833-853-0345 to ask where the case will be heard. The listed northwest courthouse is in Fayetteville, 35 East Mountain Street, Room 510, Fayetteville, AR 72701. Often by the next weekday, they appear before a magistrate judge for an initial appearance. The court reads a background report from a pretrial officer. The federal system uses no bail table. The judge rules on detention or release at a short hearing, using the 1984 Bail Reform Act.

Meanwhile, the Marshals Service can hold federal prisoners in a county jail. Search the local inmate list first; there the hold may show. Deputy marshals for this district track people in federal custody. Phone 479-289-7470 or 479-424-5000 (call either), or visit the office at 30 South 6th Street, Room 243, Fort Smith, AR 72901. Once sentenced, they go from the county jail into federal prison within weeks. Locate their facility by using the federal locator.

ICE detainer: what to expect at the jail

  • Immigration officers hear about the arrest by way of fingerprints the jail send. Then ICE might send a detainer with jail staff.
  • Under a detainer, ICE asks the Jasper jail to delay the person's release for no more than two days. Weekends and holidays count toward that limit.
  • A paid bail won't clear the detainer.
  • ICE officers may come for them before time runs out. Deadline passed? In that case the request has expired and the sheriff must let them leave.
  • ICE alone chooses the next facility.
  • Prefer to ask ICE yourself? The New Orleans field office for Arkansas sits at 181 James Drive W, St. Rose, LA 70087. Phone: 504-318-2360.
  • Search the ICE Online Detainee Locator with the A-number and home country. No A-number on hand? A name search takes date of birth, native country and the full legal name.

Headed to state prison from Jasper? How the transfer works

The state's prison system, the ADC, holds those given prison time. At first, they remain in the Jasper jail until the ADC finds a bed, sometimes for weeks. The ride ends at reception, where they get processed. ADC staff review them based on gang connections, health and mental health needs, and security level. Then, they transfer to a unit that fits them.

Check the ADC online search to find them. The Arkansas prison guide explains each unit.

Can I look at Newton County mugshots on the web?

Yes. Open a name in the Newton booking roster and Newton mugshots load with it. Old Newton bookings may not stay posted.

If a photo isn't posted, reporters may call the sheriff's office, 870-446-5124, and ask. Federal mugshots are not released with reporters or the public. The Marshals Service, which handles federal mugshots, gives out one only in narrow cases: to find a fugitive or escapee, if it is required immediately for community safety, or if sharing it could help track them down or alert neighbors. ICE pictures are released only through an ICE records request, with no promise of release.
