Federal charges: the court, release and where they are held

Federal arrests start with teams from the ATF, the U.S. Marshals, and IRS agents, sometimes alongside city police. This county falls under Arkansas's Western District, Hot Springs Division; hearings are held in Hot Springs, 100 Reserve Street, Room 347, Hot Springs, AR 71901. The Hot Springs office has no clerk staff; questions go to the clerk at 833-853-0345. An initial hearing comes quickly, before a magistrate judge. Ahead of the hearing, pretrial services looks into their job, family and record. U.S. court uses no bail table. The magistrate weighs release or detention at a detention hearing guided by the Bail Reform Act.

Search the county jail list first; there U.S. Marshals custody may show. This district's Marshals office can tell you where the person is: 479-289-7470 or 479-424-5000 (call either number), 30 South 6th Street, Room 243, Fort Smith, AR 72901. Until sentencing, the Marshals can keep federal prisoners in a county jail under contract. Those sentenced to federal prison leave the local jail for the BOP in time. Locate them with the Bureau of Prisons search.

ICE hold: how it works

  • During booking, prints taken at the jail are checked against federal agencies. ICE may then issue a detainer.
  • Paying bond does not remove the detainer; the 48 hours just begin then.
  • Under a detainer, ICE asks jail staff to push back the release by no more than 48 hours. Weekends and holidays count toward that limit.
  • Within that window, ICE often comes to collect them. If ICE never shows, the sheriff has to release the person.
  • After the transfer, their name may appear on the ICE locator — search with A-number and country of birth. ICE also offers a name search; give it first and last name, DOB and nation of birth.
  • Need a direct answer from ICE? The New Orleans office handles Arkansas and sits at 181 James Drive W, St. Rose, LA 70087, and the phone is 504-318-2360.
  • Their next facility is ICE's call.

Bound for the ADC from Murfreesboro? What the move looks like

Anyone who gets state prison will do that time with the Arkansas Division of Correction. First, most people stay in the Murfreesboro jail until the ADC sends for them. Once a bed opens, the ADC moves them to an intake unit for processing. Classification staff sort them after checking security level, any gang ties and medical and mental health needs. Their last stop is a unit that matches them.

To follow the move, use the ADC inmate search. Our state prison page lists prison addresses.

Who can get a Pike County booking photo, and how?

ICE pictures come out just through ICE's FOIA form, with no promise of release. If a photo isn't posted, reporters can call the sheriff's office at 870-285-3301 and ask. A federal mugshot isn't public, and the media can't get one either. A federal mugshot is shown only through the Marshals Service, for a wanted fugitive, when the public need to be warned now or if sharing it helps make an arrest or warn the public.
