These cases come from agencies like postal inspectors or the Marshals Service. Federal cases from this area belong to Arkansas's Eastern District, Northern Division, which meets in Jonesboro: 615 South Main Street, Room 312, Jonesboro, AR 72401. Clerk's phone: 870-972-4610. Usually the next court day, the person appears before a magistrate judge. A dollar figure isn't the starting point in federal charges. The magistrate weighs flight risk and danger at a short hearing, under the 1984 Bail Reform Act. Plan on questions from pretrial services before court.

Start on the county roster first. Some federal detainees wait in the Pocahontas jail contracted by the Marshals until sentencing. The U.S. Marshals branch for this area is at 600 West Capitol Avenue, Suite A328, Little Rock, AR 72201. Dial 501-324-6256 to find a federal prisoner. Following a prison sentence, a prisoner goes to BOP custody. Find them with the BOP inmate locator.

16. What if ICE puts a hold on your relative?

  • Jail prints are run against federal records that ICE reviews. ICE can then issue a detainer (Form I-247A).
  • Rather than going home, they may be held as long as 48 extra hours while ICE arranges pickup. Days off don't extend it; the limit stays 48 hours.
  • Paying the bond doesn't clear this hold.
  • ICE officers may pick them up within those 48 hours. If ICE misses the deadline, the sheriff is supposed to let them go.
  • Where they are sent is ICE's call.
  • For questions, phone ICE's New Orleans field office for Arkansas: 181 James Drive W, St. Rose, LA 70087, 504-318-2360.
  • To learn where they were moved, go to the detainee locator site and type in their A-number and their birth country. Missing the A-number? Use both first and last names with date of birth and home country instead.

17. Will a prison sentence mean a state unit, and what comes next?

Prison sentences are handled under the state prison system, the ADC. First, most people wait in the Pocahontas jail until the ADC schedules the move. Their first ADC stop is an intake or reception unit. There, the ADC weighs security risk, gang connections, and physical and mental health. Last, they transfer to a unit that fits that rating.

Families can search for them by name on the Division of Correction search. Our state prison guide covers prison addresses.
