15. Federal charges: where the case goes

A federal case often starts when the DEA, the FBI, or IRS agents carry out the arrest. Fort Smith is part of the Western District's Fort Smith Division, so hearings are set downtown in Fort Smith, 30 South 6th Street, Room 1038, Fort Smith, AR 72901. Clerk's phone: 833-853-0345. An initial appearance is held fast with a federal magistrate judge. There is no bail schedule for federal charges. A bail hearing decides detention or release, applying the Bail Reform Act. The court also gets a background report from pretrial services.

Meanwhile, the Marshals usually keep them in the Fort Smith jail by contract. Try the county roster, where U.S. Marshals custody may show. The Marshals Service office for this area sits at 30 South 6th Street, Room 243, Fort Smith, AR 72901. Dial 479-289-7470 and 479-424-5000 (call either number) to ask about the person. After a federal sentence, a prisoner transfers into a BOP prison, often weeks later. Follow them with the BOP locator.

16. A loved one has an ICE hold. What happens next?

  • At booking, their prints are sent to federal databases. When ICE believes the person could be removable, it can file an I-247A detainer to the Fort Smith jail.
  • Posting bail doesn't clear the ICE hold.
  • Deputies get a request to wait before letting the person go for up to 48 hours while ICE plans a pickup. A weekend day doesn't pause the count.
  • During that window, ICE can send officers to collect them. If the window passes, the jail should release the person.
  • If deputies don't know, reach ICE's New Orleans field office at 504-318-2360; it is located at 181 James Drive W, St. Rose, LA 70087.
  • To find the new center, open the detainee locator site, then give the A-number from ICE paperwork with their birth country. The locator also works by both first and last names, date of birth and nation of birth if you lack the A-number.
  • The agency chooses the detention center.

17. Headed to the ADC from Fort Smith? What happens step by step

Felony prison terms are handled by the Arkansas Division of Correction. The person usually waits in the county jail until the ADC picks them up. Their first ADC stop is an intake unit. During classification, staff weigh physical and mental health, custody level and gang connections. The next move is a unit that fits their needs.

Relatives can find them by name with the Division of Correction search. For each unit, read Arkansas state prisons.

18. Does Sebastian County show mugshots online?

Yes. The Sebastian County inmate search puts Sebastian mugshots beside each person held.

Pictures from an ICE booking are not given out on request. Instead, use an ICE records request, and the agency rules on it. It's the sheriff's call whether a photo is shared; media can call 479-783-1051. The public and reporters can't get federal mugshots as a rule. The U.S. Marshals Service, which handles them, releases one only in rare cases: to find someone who escaped, when people nearby need to be protected now or to aid a capture or warn the public.
