Arrested by federal agents? Here is the path

Federal cases start with officers from Homeland Security Investigations, the U.S. Marshals, the FBI and the Secret Service, sometimes helped by local officers. A federal case goes to the Eastern District of Arkansas, Northern Division, at the federal courthouse in Jonesboro: 615 South Main Street, Room 312, Jonesboro, AR 72401. The clerk's line: 870-972-4610. A pretrial services officer also interviews the defendant and reports for the court. An initial hearing happens fast, before a magistrate judge. Unlike state court, the federal court will not use a set dollar amount. A release hearing applying the 1984 Bail Reform Act settles whether they can leave.

Search the local roster; there a federal hold might appear. Before trial, the Marshals Service can hold them in a county jail. The Marshals Service branch for the Eastern District sits at 600 West Capitol Avenue, Suite A328, Little Rock, AR 72201. Call 501-324-6256 to learn the location of someone in federal custody. Sentenced people leave the county jail for the BOP after sentencing. Locate their facility through the BOP inmate locator.

How does an ICE detainer play out?

  • ICE hears about an arrest by way of fingerprints staff share. ICE may then send a detainer.
  • Making the bond does not lift the ICE hold.
  • The cap is 48 hours; the detainer just asks the sheriff not to let them out yet so ICE can get there. The jail may not stretch it past 48 hours.
  • ICE agents may come for them within that window. Without an ICE pickup, this means they are released.
  • ICE may move people more than once, so check the ICE locator from time to time using their A-number and country of birth. When nobody knows the A-number, fill in both first and last names, birth date and birth country.
  • If the jail can't answer, call ICE's regional office on 504-318-2360; it sits at 181 James Drive W, St. Rose, LA 70087.
  • ICE alone decides the detention center.

What comes next after a prison sentence?

Arkansas's prison system, the ADC, holds anyone given prison time. The person waits in the Ash Flat jail for a state transfer. The transfer ends at intake, where new prisoners are processed. There, the ADC checks gang ties, medical and mental health needs and security level. Their next move is the prison that suits them.

To follow the move, open the ADC online search. For visits and mail, read our Arkansas prison guide.

Can I see Sharp County mugshots online?

Yes. The Sharp County roster puts Sharp mugshots beside each person held. Old Sharp bookings may not stay posted.

If a booking picture hasn't been posted, press requests go to the sheriff's office at 870-994-7329. ICE intake photos are not given out by phone. Instead, use a FOIA request to ICE, which the agency reviews. Federal mugshots stay private, even for reporters. On the federal side, the mugshot is held by the Marshals and goes public only for a wanted fugitive, when it's required immediately to protect the public or when the photo helps catch them or warn the public.
