Amador County Jail Inmate Bail & Bonds
Bail in Amador County: Jackson's jail, its courthouse and the first two days
Adults arrested in Amador County are booked into the Amador County Jail, 700 Court Street, Jackson, run by the Sheriff's Office. Search for him on Amador County Inmate Search first. The sheriff's main office is 209-223-6500. Jail and court sit in separate buildings in Jackson, and each one handles part of bail.
1. How do I tell if my wife is in the Court Street jail?
Run her name through Amador County Inmate Search. Fresh bookings lag; give it an hour or two and search again. If she still does not appear, call the sheriff's main office at 209-223-6500. After her booking she is allowed phone calls, including one to arrange bail, so she may be able to reach you first.
2. Who answers my questions about bail: the jail or the court?
Both, for different things. The jail knows whether she is in custody and what the booking shows. The court clerk handles warrants, hearings, and payments tied to a case. Call the sheriff at 209-223-6500, then the criminal clerk at 209-257-2604. The clerk's other line is 209-257-2605.
3. When can I reach the courthouse?
The court is at 500 Argonaut Lane, Jackson. It announced that telephone and counter hours became 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, starting March 2, 2026. The building itself stays open 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The general line is 209-257-2600.
4. How long before an Amador judge sees him?
Within 48 hours under Penal Code 825, leaving out Sundays and holidays. The court's calendar shows mass arraignments in Department 1 on Mondays at 10:00 a.m. and Fridays at 8:30 a.m., and an in-custody calendar every weekday at 1:30 p.m. Its own notice on that in-custody calendar is old, so check the daily calendar or call 209-257-2600.
5. How much will the bail be?
Ask the court clerk at 209-257-2604 for the dollar figure for the charge. The Amador court posts a felony bail schedule dated 2022 as a scanned picture, so it cannot be searched, and under Penal Code 1269b the judges adopt a countywide schedule and revise it each year. Look at Amador County Inmate Search for the amount on the booking record. A judge can change that amount, so ask a lawyer before you borrow money.
6. Can the jail let him out before he sees a judge?
Sometimes. Under Penal Code 1269b, the officer in charge of a jail can accept bail at the scheduled amount and release the person. Not every charge qualifies. Penal Code 1270.1 sends serious or violent felonies, and some domestic violence cases, to an open-court hearing before release. Call 209-223-6500 to ask about his charge.
7. What do I pay with, and where?
Ask the sheriff's main office, 209-223-6500, where bail is taken and what forms it accepts before you go. Weekdays from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. the lobby kiosk at the jail, 700 Court Street, Jackson, CA 95642 (209-223-6521), takes account deposits, but that money covers calls and canteen items, not release. Do not mix up the two.
8. Should we call a bondsman or pay it ourselves?
A bondsman makes sense only if you cannot cover the whole bail. The state insurance department says the usual fee is 10 percent of the bond plus reasonable expenses. That fee stays with the agent, even if charges are dropped. Bail agents may not solicit you. The department keeps a bail agent lookup. Ask for the terms on paper.
9. Will Amador take a home or acreage instead of cash?
It may, with a judge's approval. Penal Code 1279 requires the owner to live in California. A judge holds a hearing, and the equity must be twice the bond or more. For the property bond paperwork, contact the Amador County Superior Court, 500 Argonaut Lane, Jackson, CA 95642, through its criminal clerk at 209-257-2604 before you collect deeds.
10. What does it mean when no bail amount shows?
It may be a hold, a charge that needs a judge's decision, or a true denial. The state constitution, article I, section 12, lets a judge deny bail for capital crimes, some violent or sexual felonies, and felonies involving a serious threat. Probation, parole, and other-county holds also block release. Ask the clerk which one applies. The 2026 state Supreme Court case In re Kowalczyk limits denials.
11. Money is tight. Can Amador give him a lawyer?
Tell the judge he needs appointed counsel. The court says the Public Defender may be assigned, and the judge looks at income and expenses. The Public Defender's office is at 201 Clinton Road, Suite 202, Jackson, in the DMV building. A directory lists its phone as 209-223-0877; the clerk at 209-257-2604 can confirm.
12. Our 16-year-old was picked up in Amador. Where would he be?
Amador County has no secure juvenile hall of its own. Amador's juvenile plan filed with the state says probation rents space in secure youth sites in other counties when a judge orders a teen held. No one building is named. Call the juvenile clerk at 209-257-2660 or the probation chief at 209-223-6229 to learn where he is. The court says a detention hearing must happen within 72 hours, counting only court business days. Youth files stay confidential, so the adult lookup leaves him out.
13. If he misses court, can we still fix it?
Often yes, if you move fast. Skip a date and the judge may forfeit bail, though Penal Code 1305 lets that be reversed if he shows up within 180 days. Mailed notice adds five days. Start with the clerk at 209-257-2604, then the lawyer, then the bondsman.
14. Jackson, Ione, or Sutter Creek police arrested him. Now what?
The county lists three city departments: Jackson at 209-223-1771, Sutter Creek at 209-267-5647, and Ione at 209-274-2456. Neither lists a holding cell, so arrested adults usually go to the Court Street jail. Search his name in Amador County Inmate Search before you call a city office. Still not listed hours later? Get the report number from the police agency that arrested him.
15. Does an Amador judge have to think about what we can afford?
Yes. The 2021 Humphrey case requires it, and the 2026 Kowalczyk decision goes further: bail must generally be reachable for the person in front of the judge. In Jackson, bring pay stubs or a simple list of bills so the appointed lawyer can show the court your limits.
16. Where does Amador County hold court?
Every Amador case goes to one building in Jackson, a few minutes from the county jail on Court Street:
- Amador courthouse: 500 Argonaut Lane, Jackson, CA 95642 · 209-257-2600
17. How is a federal arrest in Amador different from a normal booking?
When FBI, DEA or other U.S. agents make the arrest, Jackson's court and its bail list are not involved. The person is taken to Sacramento, to Sacramento federal courthouse, 501 I Street, Sacramento, CA 95814, and a magistrate judge decides on release under federal law.
- Before the hearing, Pretrial Services asks about his home, work and record.
- The detention hearing may happen right away or a few days later, up to three days if the government asks, five if his lawyer does.
- If released, it's on federal conditions, which may include a bond that relatives sign.
- If held, he goes to a jail the Marshals contract with, which may be far from Amador.
Call U.S. Marshals Service, 501 I Street, Suite 5600, Sacramento, 916-930-2030 to learn where he is being housed.
18. Will an ICE detainer keep him in the Amador jail after bail?
Think of a detainer as ICE asking Jackson's jail for a two-day head start: keep him as much as 48 hours beyond his release time, with weekends and holidays counted (8 CFR 287.7). Amador deputies follow SB 54, which forbids that extra time. Notice of a release date can go to ICE only for certain serious or violent records. Before ICE may interview him in jail, he must be given a TRUTH Act form saying the talk is voluntary.
Immigration cases from the Mother Lode go through San Francisco ICE field office, 630 Sansome Street, Room 590, San Francisco, CA 94111, 415-365-8800, and detention is usually at:
- Mesa Verde ICE Processing Center: 425 Golden State Avenue, Bakersfield, CA 93301
- Golden State Annex: 611 Frontage Road, McFarland, CA 93250
- California City detention site: 22844 Virginia Boulevard, California City, CA 93505
19. What online searches can we use for someone from an Amador arrest?
- Amador jail: Amador County Inmate Search. Type his last and first name; you'll see charges, bail and his court date. If the list is blank, wait an hour or two after booking and search again.
- VINE: VINELink (https://vinelink.vineapps.com/). Select California and enter the name. It shows whether he is held and in what facility.
- Federal: Federal Bureau of Prisons Inmate Locator (https://www.bop.gov/inmateloc/). Search by register number or by name with race and age. If he isn't sentenced yet, ask the Marshals at 916-930-2030.
- State prison: CDCR Inmate Locator (https://inmatelocator.cdcr.ca.gov/). Enter his CDCR number or name. It lists the prison once he's moved from Jackson.
- ICE: ICE Online Detainee Locator System (https://locator.ice.gov/odls/). Use his A-number or his name, and choose his home country. A blank result after two days means call 415-365-8800.
20. How do I know a bail phone call is real?
Treat any call or text demanding gift cards or an instant transfer as a scam. Verify any caller by dialing the sheriff yourself at 209-223-6500 or the clerk at 209-257-2600.
