Del Norte County Jail Inmate Search
Arrested in Del Norte County: locating someone in the Crescent City jail
Del Norte is California's far northwest corner, with Crescent City as its only city and Pelican Bay State Prison just north of town. People arrested by local agencies go to the Del Norte County Jail at 650 Fifth Street, Crescent City. Search Del Norte County Inmate Search or phone 707-464-4191.
1. Is the county jail the same as Pelican Bay?
They are separate. Pelican Bay holds people serving state prison terms, not new arrests. Anyone newly arrested in Crescent City, Smith River, Gasquet or Klamath goes to the Sheriff-run Del Norte County Jail, 650 Fifth Street, Crescent City, CA 95531 (707-464-4191).
Back to questions ↑2. How can I find out if they're in custody?
Try Del Norte County Inmate Search. If the name isn't there yet, the Sheriff's line at 707-464-4191 can confirm a booking.
Back to questions ↑3. How long until a Crescent City arraignment?
California gives the court 48 hours, without counting Sundays or holidays, to arraign someone held in jail. Del Norte Superior Court is at 450 H Street in Crescent City (707-464-8115). See Del Norte court steps.
Inmates here appear either in the courtroom or by video, depending on what the court schedules, so the CourtCall step stays with whoever is a party. Parties to a related family, probate or civil case can register on CourtCall where their judge allows.
Back to questions ↑4. Can they get out on bail before then?
Often, yes. The court's bail schedule gives a starting amount for most charges, covered either by cash at Fifth Street or by a bondsman's bond. At arraignment the judge can lower it, raise it, or grant release on their own promise, taking the person's finances into account. Our Del Norte bail guide explains more.
Back to questions ↑5. Who defends people who can't pay a lawyer?
The court appoints defense counsel at the first hearing when a person qualifies. Ask the clerk at 707-464-8115 for the name of the appointed office.
Back to questions ↑6. Seeing someone at the Fifth Street jail
Visits must be set up in advance with photo ID, and times depend on housing. See Del Norte visiting and video visits.
Back to questions ↑7. Sending letters or money
Write to the inmate's full name and booking number at 650 Fifth Street, Crescent City, CA 95531. Helpful links: mail rules, money for the books, commissary buys, calling plans, messages, tablets.
Back to questions ↑8. Juveniles from Del Norte
The county has no juvenile hall of its own. Youths who must be detained are sent to halls in Humboldt or Shasta County under contract. Del Norte Probation (707-464-7215) handles intake and calls parents.
Back to questions ↑9. Fake calls about bail
Del Norte deputies never phone families wanting payment through a wire, gift card or app. That kind of caller is a fraud; check by calling with the Sheriff's office at 707-464-4191.
Back to questions ↑10. What if the FBI arrested them?
It usually starts after teams from the DEA, the Postal Inspection Service, or Homeland Security Investigations carry out an arrest. A magistrate judge also holds hearings at the McKinleyville courthouse, 3140 Boeing Avenue, McKinleyville, CA 95519 (707-445-3612). Federal charges filed here land in the Northern District of California: 450 Golden Gate Avenue, San Francisco, CA 94102. With questions, reach the clerk at 415-522-2000. An initial appearance comes quickly with a magistrate judge. Release isn't based on a schedule in the federal courts. Under the 1984 Bail Reform Act, a judge holds a hearing to decide whether they can leave. Pretrial services first meets the accused and sends a report to the court.
Meanwhile, the Marshals Service usually keeps federal prisoners in a private jail. Look them up with the sheriff's roster to see if they are there. Phoning the Marshals at 707-839-4829 can tell you where the person is held. The office is at 3140 Boeing Avenue, McKinleyville, CA 95519. Following a prison sentence, they move to the federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) once there is room. Find the inmate on the federal inmate locator.
Back to questions ↑11. A loved one has an ICE detainer. What happens next?
- ICE learns about most arrests through the prints staff take. ICE can then file a detainer at the jail.
- Jailers in Crescent City get a request to keep the inmate inside the Del Norte jail up to 48 hours after they would otherwise be released (8 CFR 287.7(d)). Crescent City jail staff answer to Gov. Code 7284.6 (SB 54), so a person walks out when the local case permits, with ICE notice or transfer reserved for a judicial warrant or listed serious crimes.
- Making bond will not end the detainer.
- Within that window, ICE officers may come for them. If nobody comes, the sheriff should let them go.
- To ask where the person is, reach ICE's San Francisco field office (it covers Northern California) at 415-365-8800. Address: 630 Sansome Street, Room 590, San Francisco, CA 94111.
- Their next facility is ICE's call.
- The ICE locator looks up people using your loved one's A-number plus birth country. No A-number? Search by name instead: it asks for the exact name, date of birth and native country.
12. How will a move from the Crescent City jail to the CDCR happen?
The state's prison system, the CDCR, takes those given a felony prison sentence. Until then, your loved one remains in the Crescent City jail until the CDCR has room, sometimes for months. Next, they are taken to an intake center for check-in. During classification, staff review medical and mental care, security level and gang connections. The last move is the unit that matches those results.
Open the state inmate search to see their location. The California state prison guide has visits and mail.
Back to questions ↑13. Does the Del Norte jail post mugshots online?
No. Del Norte keeps mugshots off the Del Norte County roster.
California's rule is Penal Code 13665. It deals with social media. It applies to most nonviolent arrests. Agencies may not post those photos there. Photos posted there expire after 14 days. Fugitives and threats are the exceptions. The rule skips the sheriff's own site. Even so, many sheriffs leave photos off.
For an ICE booking picture, send a FOIA request to ICE; ICE must sign off. A reporter may seek an unposted mugshot from sheriff's staff at 707-464-4191. U.S. booking photos are kept private. Marshals rules keep release to a few cases: to find an escaped prisoner, for immediate public safety or when posting it supports catching them or a public warning.
Back to questions ↑14. Which agency arrested them in Del Norte County?
- Crescent City Police: 707-464-2133
- Del Norte County Sheriff's Office: 707-464-4191
Tribal police for the Yurok and Tolowa Dee-ni' communities and the Highway Patrol on US 101 also make arrests, but adults still come to the county jail.
Back to questions ↑15. Could my cousin at the Fifth Street jail be held on a warrant?
It happens often near the Oregon line. Sheriff's deputies serve local and out-of-state warrants, and people arrested on them are booked at the Fifth Street jail. Dispatch at 707-464-4191 can check a name against statewide records, the route California sets for families here. The H Street court lists its online services, and a phone call to the clerk in Room 209 covers case status and rescheduling. If the warrant turns out to name you, an attorney can arrange a surrender so you choose when to walk in.
