10. Picked up by federal agents? The steps

A federal case normally begins after agencies like the IRS or the ATF carry out the arrest. U.S. charges from Bridgeport go to the Eastern District of California, Sacramento Division: 501 I Street, Sacramento, CA 95814. Clerk staff in Sacramento take calls at 916-930-4000. A pretrial services officer interviews the inmate and sends a report to the court. Expect an initial appearance with a U.S. magistrate the next court day. Release is not a fixed amount in the federal courts. Under federal bail law, the magistrate leads a quick hearing then rules on the release terms.

Search for them on the jail's inmate list. Calling the Marshals on 916-930-2030 can confirm where they are held. It is located at 501 I Street, Suite 5600, Sacramento, CA 95814. Many federal detainees wait in a private jail contracted by the Marshals until sentencing. Once there is sentencing to prison, the inmate goes to the federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP). Track the inmate with the BOP locator.

11. ICE hold: the steps

  • Immigration officers learn about an arrest from booking prints deputies share. Then ICE might issue a detainer.
  • Making bail does not end the ICE hold.
  • Once the request comes in, ICE is asking the sheriff to keep your loved one in custody up to 48 hours after they would otherwise be released (8 CFR 287.7(d)). Bridgeport jailers follow the California Values Act (SB 54): people leave on the local case's schedule, and the jail shares release details or transfers someone to ICE only with a judge's warrant or a qualifying serious conviction.
  • ICE agents may collect them in person in that time. If they don't come, the sheriff should free them.
  • Need to reach ICE? Its San Francisco field office sits at 630 Sansome Street, Room 590, San Francisco, CA 94111; the number is 415-365-8800.
  • Only ICE chooses where they go next.
  • Transfers between centers happen, so check the ICE locator every few days using your loved one's A-number and country of birth. Can't find your loved one's A-number? Enter birth date, country of birth and your loved one's legal name instead.

12. What comes next after a prison sentence?

A prison term is handled by the state corrections department (CDCR). For now, most people stay in the Bridgeport jail until the CDCR finds a bed, sometimes for months. After that, they're taken to a reception unit where they're processed. Prison staff classify new arrivals for health care needs, security level, and gang connections. The next step is a unit that matches those results.

Use the CDCR inmate locator for their unit. Our California prison page covers each unit.

13. Can I see Mono County mugshots online?

You can find a Mono name in the Mono custody lookup, but no mugshots come with it.

The state rule is Section 13665. It is about social media only. It applies to most nonviolent arrests. Those mugshots can't go on social media. Posts must come down within 14 days. Exceptions exist for fugitives and public threats. Jail websites are outside this law. Still, most California rosters show no photos.

If a photo is needed, news outlets may call the sheriff's office, 760-932-7549. U.S. booking photos aren't given with the community or the media. The agency that takes them, the Marshals Service, publishes one only to find a wanted person, to aid an arrest or warn the community or when the community needs to be protected quickly. For an immigration mugshot, submit a records request to ICE; ICE must sign off.

The Sheriff's Office checks warrants, statewide ones included, at 760-932-7549. The court handles name searches by request, so allow a little time for an answer.
