Do you suspect there’s a warrant for your arrest in Monterey County or elsewhere in California? Or do you need details about a court case involving a friend or relative? A good place to start is the California Superior Court.
Most criminal defendants in Monterey County and throughout California have a constitutional right to be released on bail before trial, with exceptions for certain capital and violent felony charges. The California Supreme Court has held that a person cannot be kept in jail solely because they can’t afford bail unless no less restrictive condition would protect public safety or ensure their return to court, so judges must consider ability to pay. Under Rule 4.101, judges also cannot consider whether a defendant has asked for a jury trial.
Want to know how much an inmate’s bail is? Call the Monterey County Youth Center at 831-755-3782, or if you know the charge, check the bail schedule for Monterey County. The county accepts cash, a surety bond, or a property bond.
Although the Monterey County Youth Center has a license for 85 inmates, it frequently has to accommodate many more, especially on weekends. Most city and county jails in California have a monthly turnover of at least 35-40%, another 25-30% every 90 days, another 15-20% every six months, and about 8-9% of inmates who stay between six and twelve months. Inmates held longer than a year usually face serious charges like rape or murder. Those cases take time to prepare for trial, so offenders arrested in this county remain in custody at one of the Monterey County facilities much longer.
Approximately 25,980 offenders are arrested and detained by Monterey County law enforcement agencies every year.
