11. How does an ICE detainer work here?

  • When someone is booked, their prints are shared with federal databases. ICE can then place a detainer.
  • A paid bail won't lift an ICE hold.
  • Through the I-247A, ICE requests that jailers keep the person for immigration officers up to 48 hours after they would otherwise be released (8 CFR 287.7(d)). Nevada City jail staff are guided by the Values Act (SB 54): the person goes home when the county case allows, and ICE gets notice or a transfer only on a judicial warrant or a qualifying conviction.
  • ICE officers can collect them in that time. If ICE stays away, that means release.
  • The agency chooses the next facility.
  • To learn their location, phone ICE's San Francisco field office at 415-365-8800, located at 630 Sansome Street, Room 590, San Francisco, CA 94111.
  • Look on the ICE online detainee locator by A-number and native country. Don't have the A-number? Use your loved one's full name, date of birth, and nation of birth instead.

12. How will the move from the Nevada City jail to state prison happen?

Prison time is overseen by California's corrections department (CDCR). Until then, the person stays in the Nevada City jail until the state has room. The first CDCR stop is an intake unit for processing. Prison staff rate them based on gang affiliation, health care needs and custody score. Their next step is the prison that suits the findings.

To find them, try the CDCR online locator. Our California prison guide explains prison addresses.

13. Does Nevada County show mugshots online?

Nevada mugshots are not shown in the Nevada in-custody list, only names and booking details.

Section 13665 sets the state rule. It covers social media posts. It applies to most nonviolent arrests. Those mugshots can't go on social media. Photos posted there expire after 14 days. Exceptions exist for fugitives and public threats. Jail websites are outside this law. Still, most California rosters show no photos.

Immigration officials share mugshots only through an ICE public records request that ICE approves. Unreleased booking photos are handled by sheriff's staff; journalists can call 530-265-1471. Federal booking photos are not made public. Marshals policy keeps release to three situations: for an escaped inmate or fugitive, when the public must be protected now, or when posting it aids the search or an alert to residents.

Someone arrested on a warrant goes to the Maidu Avenue jail, and a judge in the county seat generally sees them about two court days later. To act first, ask a Grass Valley lawyer to set up a surrender; the Church Street clerk can help with a new date.
