Back to questions ↑10. Federal charges: the court, release and where they're held
It often starts after the U.S. Marshals, the ATF, the FBI and the Secret Service make the arrest. Placer County is part of the Eastern District of California, Sacramento Division; court dates happen at the federal building in Sacramento, 501 I Street, Sacramento, CA 95814. Clerk staff in Sacramento take calls at 916-930-4000. The first appearance is held fast with a magistrate judge. Bail is not a preset figure in U.S. District Court. Applying federal bail law, the judge leads a detention hearing to decide release and its conditions. Expect questions from pretrial services before court.
Search for them on the county roster. While it's open, the Marshals can hold your loved one in a county jail through a contract. Phoning the Marshals at 916-930-2030 may confirm where they are. Its address is 501 I Street, Suite 5600, Sacramento, CA 95814. Following a prison sentence, a prisoner transfers into BOP custody, often weeks later. Follow the person on the federal inmate locator.
Back to questions ↑11. ICE hold: how it works
- At booking, their prints are shared with federal agencies. ICE can then issue a detainer.
- Even after bail paid, the ICE hold remains active.
- ICE asks the jail to hold on to the inmate for federal agents up to 48 hours after they would otherwise be released (8 CFR 287.7(d)). Auburn's jail applies the Values Act through Gov. Code 7284.6, so release tracks the local case, and a transfer to ICE requires a judicial warrant or one of the serious convictions state law lists.
- ICE officers may collect them in person before time runs out. Deadline passed? Then the request runs out and the sheriff lets them go.
- Relatives can track them online through the ICE Online Detainee Locator System, which asks for the A-number plus where they were born. No ICE number? The name option takes the inmate's legal name, DOB, and country of birth.
- The last stop is ICE's call and may change.
- ICE handles detainers here out of the San Francisco office, at 630 Sansome Street, Room 590, San Francisco, CA 94111; call 415-365-8800.
12. From the Placer County jail for state prison: what to expect
Felony prison terms are served by the CDCR. At first, most people stay in the Placer County jail while the state schedules the move. When space opens, they are taken to a reception center to be processed. CDCR staff rate them based on their risk level, any gang affiliation and health care needs. The last move is a housing unit that fits those results.
The CDCR inmate locator lists where they are housed. Our state prison page explains prison addresses.
Back to questions ↑13. Does the Placer jail post mugshots online?
Try the Placer jail search first; the Placer record may not include mugshots.
Section 13665 is the key law. Social media is what it covers. Nonviolent arrests are the main target. Agencies may not post those photos there. Photos posted there expire after 14 days. A judge can also allow a post. Jail websites are outside this law. Even so, many sheriffs leave photos off.
Non-public booking photos come from sheriff's staff; media may call 530-889-7800. Federal booking photos are kept from the public or the press. The office that photographs prisoners, the federal Marshals Service, makes one public only for a wanted fugitive, when posting it supports an arrest or an alert to residents or for urgent public safety. ICE booking photos need a request through an ICE records request and approved by ICE.
