The county lists three ways. Cash must be the exact amount. Write cashier's checks, certified checks and money orders to the Placer Trial Court; for an out-of-county warrant, make them payable to that county's court. Sometimes. Under Penal Code 853.6, most misdemeanor arrests end with a signed ticket and release, except in set situations like an open warrant, a medical need, or no ID. A judge can also release someone on their own word at arraignment. If the record shows a hold or warrant, ask the jail about it.

For serious or violent felonies, and for certain domestic violence and stalking-type charges, the court must hold a hearing before it lowers bail below the schedule or releases the person without money (Penal Code 1270.1). Article I, section 12 of the state constitution lets a Placer judge refuse bail in capital cases, some violent or sex felonies, and felonies where he threatened grave injury, after strong proof and written findings. Placer County hires its public defender through a private contract with a Rocklin law office. The office is at 3785 Placer Corporate Drive, Suite 550, Rocklin, and the phone is 916-644-1100. At the first hearing, request a court-appointed attorney. When that office can't take him because of a conflict, the judge names someone else.

The Placer judge orders the bail forfeited. For bonds above $400, the clerk mails notice, and the law gives the person 180 days, plus 5 more days because the notice goes by mail, to come back to court so the bond can be cleared (Penal Code 1305). Money for commissary goes to the inmate's account through the Sheriff's deposit system, and it never buys release. The Sheriff accepts money orders or cashier's checks up to $175 each for that use. Bail is paid separately, as described above. Keep every receipt.
