10. Who handles federal charges from San Joaquin County?

These cases start with agencies like the U.S. Marshals, the ATF, and the Secret Service, often helped by state officers. Any federal charge is heard by the Sacramento division (Eastern District of California), at the federal building in Sacramento: 501 I Street, Sacramento, CA 95814. Clerk's phone: 916-930-4000. Soon after booking, your loved one meets a magistrate judge. Pretrial services meets the defendant and reports to the court. Bail isn't set from a chart at the U.S. District Court. Under the federal bail statute, the judge leads a short hearing and decides release and its conditions.

Look them up with the sheriff's roster. The Marshals Service office for the Eastern District of California sits at 501 I Street, Suite 5600, Sacramento, CA 95814. Call 916-930-2030 to ask about a federal prisoner. Until sentencing, the Marshals often place federal prisoners in local jails under contract. A conviction with prison time moves the person from the local jail to the BOP. Use the online federal locator for their facility once they arrive.

11. How will an ICE hold play out?

  • When someone is booked, their prints are sent to federal agencies. Then ICE might place a detainer.
  • That form asks the sheriff to hold your loved one in the San Joaquin County jail up to 48 hours after they would otherwise be released (8 CFR 287.7(d)). French Camp jail staff apply the Values Act (Gov. Code 7284.6), releasing people on the normal schedule and transferring someone to ICE only when a court warrant or a qualifying serious record supports it.
  • A posted bail won't end an ICE hold.
  • While the hold lasts, ICE can come to collect them. Without an ICE pickup, that should mean release.
  • Families can follow your loved one on the web through the locator site; it needs the inmate's A-number plus home country. Can't find the inmate's A-number? Use birth date, nation of birth, and the inmate's full name instead.
  • If deputies don't know, try ICE's San Francisco field office on 415-365-8800; its address is 630 Sansome Street, Room 590, San Francisco, CA 94111.
  • ICE itself decides where they go next.

12. Headed to a CDCR unit? How the transfer works

A prison sentence is managed by California's prison agency (CDCR). At first, your loved one stays in the French Camp jail until the CDCR has room. The trip lands them at intake, where they're checked in. There, the CDCR checks any gang affiliation, security risk, and medical and mental care. The final stop is a unit that suits them.

Try the CDCR inmate locator to locate them. Our California state prison page lists prison addresses.

13. San Joaquin County mugshots: can I view them online?

Check the San Joaquin County roster for the person; San Joaquin may not post mugshots there.

California's rule is PC 13665. It deals with social media. Most nonviolent arrests fall under it. Agencies may not post those photos there. Posts must come down within 14 days. A judge can also allow a post. The sheriff's own website isn't covered. Most sheriffs in California skip photos anyway.

To get an ICE mugshot, file a public records request to ICE. ICE must approve it. News outlets that want a booking picture that isn't public can call sheriff's staff at 209-468-4400. Federal mugshots are not made public. Requests from families or reporters don't change that; the Marshals make one public only for an escapee or fugitive, for pressing public safety or if release helps make an arrest or alert neighbors.

14. Which agency arrested them in San Joaquin County?

Ripon, Escalon and Lathrop are also served by their own or contract police.

15. Is my sister at the French Camp jail on a warrant?

Warrant arrests from Lodi to Tracy, with Ripon and Escalon included, are booked at the county jail on Michael Canlis Boulevard. A pending case can be looked up in the court's online case search. The Sheriff's Office answers warrant questions at 209-468-4400, and those deputies check statewide records as well. For your own warrant, a Lodi or Stockton lawyer can schedule a surrender on a weekday morning, which keeps things calm, and the East Weber Avenue clerk can help you get a new hearing on the calendar.
