Every detail on this page is checked by hand, not scraped. This unofficial directory helps friends and family of incarcerated individuals find critical information — inmate lists, locations, bail resources, visitation hours, rules, and text, phone, email, and mail services — for jails, detention centers, and prisons across the United States.
To find out if someone is being held at the 162-bed Rountree Rehabilitation and Reentry Facility, call 831-454-7873 at any hour or search the roster with the inmate search tool.
The facility receives everyone arrested in the county on misdemeanor and felony charges for booking and processing. Inmates may then be bonded out, released on their own recognizance, or held until the disposition of their trial.
Those sentenced to less than one year serve their sentence at this jail. Those sentenced to longer terms are transferred to the California State Prison System or the Federal Bureau of Prisons.
Read on for the visitation schedule, inmate account funding, mail guidelines, inmate phone service, voicemail, email and texting, tablet rentals, bail bond instructions, and commissary ordering.
We recommend saving the inmate’s jail ID or booking number, which is needed for mail and other contact. If it isn’t listed online, call Rountree Rehabilitation and Reentry Facility at 831-454-7873.

Rountree Rehabilitation and Reentry Facility Inmate Search
For information about warrants in Santa Cruz County or anywhere else in California, or about a court case involving you, a friend, or a relative, a good place to start is the California Superior Court.
Most criminal defendants in California, including in Santa Cruz County, have a constitutional right to bail before trial, with exceptions for certain capital and violent felony cases. The California Supreme Court has ruled that judges must consider ability to pay and may not keep someone in jail just because they can’t afford bail unless no less restrictive condition would protect public safety or ensure their return to court. Under Rule 4.101, judges also may not consider whether the defendant wants a jury trial.
The jail can tell you an inmate’s bail if you call the Rountree Rehabilitation and Reentry Facility at 831-454-7873. You can also look up the Santa Cruz County bail schedule on your own, as long as you know the crime the inmate was arrested for. This county accepts cash, surety bonds, and property bonds.
Although the Rountree Rehabilitation and Reentry Facility is licensed for 162 inmates, it frequently holds more than that, particularly on weekends. City and county jails in California typically turn over at least 35-40% of their population every month, another 25-30% every 90 days, and another 15-20% every six months, with roughly 8-9% staying six to twelve months. Inmates who stay longer than a year are usually charged with serious crimes like murder or rape. Those cases take a long time to prepare for trial, so offenders arrested in this county for them stay in one of the Santa Cruz County facilities much longer.
Santa Cruz County law enforcement agencies arrest and detain approximately 14,960 offenders every year.
The Rehabilitation and Reentry Facility at 100 Rountree Lane, Watsonville, CA 95076 is the Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office’s minimum-security jail, built next to the Rountree Medium Facility. It opened in mid-2018 with 64 beds and cost $25 million, paid for mostly by a state SB 1022 grant. Instead of traditional cells, it has open dorms where people live under direct supervision. People here are low-level offenders close to the end of their time in custody. The building works more like a school than a cellblock, with a computer lab and culinary and construction labs. Programs include vocational training, writing, landscaping and agriculture, parenting, and domestic violence prevention. Call (831) 454-7873, the same line as Rountree Medium.
Everyone is booked at the Main Jail, 259 Water Street, Santa Cruz, and must be arraigned within 48 hours, not counting Sundays and holidays (Penal Code §825). Later, people are classified to this facility. Use the Sheriff’s Web Jail Viewer or call to confirm someone is here.
Weekend non-contact visits follow the Rountree schedule. Visits last an hour, on Saturday and Sunday at 8, 9 and 10 a.m. and 1, 2 and 3 p.m. Book them by calling (831) 454-7873, Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Visitors must be approved through a Visitor Request Form, which can take up to five days, and the person must have been in custody 72 court hours. Up to two adults, or one adult and two children, may visit at a time, with photo ID and birth certificates for the children. This facility also offers family contact visits for parents with minor children. They’re held on the third Saturday of each month at 8 a.m., 10 a.m., noon and 1:30 p.m., and booked 21 to 14 days ahead at the same number. Only one adult can come, along with the children, and the adult can’t have physical contact with the person in custody. Long-distance visitors can ask whether more time is possible.
Mail, money and phones work the same as at the other county jails. Send personal mail to Smart Communications – Santa Cruz County Jail, Attention To: (name – ID or S number), P.O. Box 9143, Seminole, FL 33775-9143, and legal mail on letterhead directly to the facility. Add money through TouchPay at touchpayonline.com or (866) 232-1899, using facility code 295060. Phones are through ICSolutions, (888) 506-8407. To release property, the person signs a Property Release Form. Pickups are weekdays, 8 to 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 to 3:30 p.m.
If a new case comes up, bail follows California rules. Most people have a constitutional right to bail, except in capital cases, certain violent or sexual-assault felonies, and serious threats proven by clear and convincing evidence, and judges have to weigh ability to pay under In re Humphrey (2021). Cash bail is posted at the Main Jail in cash or by cashier’s check payable to the Santa Cruz County Superior Court. The Watsonville Courthouse is at 1 Second Street, (831) 786-7200. Nearby, there’s gas at the 76 at 1597 Freedom Blvd. and food at Wendy’s, 1480 Freedom Blvd. For rooms, try the Best Western Rose Garden Inn (740 Freedom Blvd.) or Motel 6 Watsonville (125 Silver Leaf Dr.).
After an arrest, individuals are taken to Rountree Rehabilitation and Reentry Facility where they go through booking. This process includes identifying the person, reviewing charges, and determining whether they will be released on their own, eligible for bail, or detained until their court date.
It’s crucial to remain silent after being arrested. Anything said may be used in court, so it’s better to refrain from speaking until consulting with an attorney.
The following steps outline the booking procedure at Rountree Rehabilitation and Reentry Facility:
