One of the main goals of the Santa Cruz County Juvenile Hall is to reduce the number of youth who are detained and to find alternative solutions and programs for rehabilitation. Detention is used as a last resort to offer a more intensive approach and to immerse them in an environment of rehabilitation and treatment. All youth are treated with respect and all basic needs are provided for along with opportunities to learn new skills, t6ake responsibility for their actions, learn positive social interactions and relationship building. When possible, less restrictive methods are attempted, including home supervision and community service opportunities. While detained at the juvenile hall classes are provided each day by the local school board to maintain education, recreation time is provided, as well as physical education and other classes. Mentors assist youth in learning the life skills and decision making that they need, and other programs include planned parenthood, NA and AA, Alateen, movie nights, counseling, religious programs, job readiness programs, and others. Mail: Mail is permitted in the form of letters through the US Postal Service. Those who are within another facility, are on probation, or who are involved in a restraining order or order of protection are unable to have contact with a youth who is in the juvenile hall. Phones: Common areas have phones for youth to call their parents or guardians during their free hours. These calls are outgoing only. Visitation: Visits are permitted for parents or guardians, with special permission in some cases for grandparents, children of the young offenders, and their spouse.
