10. Who handles federal cases from Siskiyou County?

It usually starts when groups such as the FBI, the U.S. Marshals, and the IRS make an arrest. Hearings for Yreka cases are held in the federal courthouse in Sacramento, 501 I Street, Sacramento, CA 95814, under the Eastern District of California, Sacramento Division. With questions, phone the clerk at 916-930-4000. Soon after booking, the inmate goes in front of a magistrate judge who reads the charges. Expect questions from pretrial services before court. No one uses a preset bail list for federal charges. A detention hearing decides detention or release, using the Bail Reform Act.

Try the local roster; there a Marshals hold may show. A call to the Marshals on 916-930-2030 will confirm where they are held. The office sits at 501 I Street, Suite 5600, Sacramento, CA 95814. During the case, the Marshals may keep federal prisoners in a private jail through a contract. Sentenced people leave the county jail to the BOP once sentenced. Find their facility through the federal locator.

11. ICE detainer: the steps for families

  • Immigration officers hear about the arrest from the prints staff share. ICE may then place a detainer.
  • Making bail doesn't clear this hold. The hold simply begins then.
  • Under a detainer, the sheriff is asked to keep your loved one in the Siskiyou County jail up to 48 hours after they would otherwise be released (8 CFR 287.7(d)). Yreka jailers follow SB 54, the California Values Act, so the person leaves on the local schedule, and ICE receives a release date or custody only with a signed judicial warrant or a listed serious crime.
  • ICE officers often take custody in person inside that window. If ICE stays away, this means release.
  • If the jail cannot answer, try ICE's San Francisco field office on 415-365-8800; it sits at 630 Sansome Street, Room 590, San Francisco, CA 94111.
  • Check the ICE online locator with an A-number and home country. Anyone without your loved one's A-number can type in date of birth, nation of birth and the exact name.
  • The agency decides the next facility.

12. From the Yreka jail for state prison: the steps

Prison time is carried out under the state corrections department (CDCR). Before that, most people stay in the Yreka jail while the CDCR schedules the move, which sometimes takes weeks. Once a bed opens, they're taken to an intake or reception unit where they're processed. During classification, the CDCR looks at custody score, physical and emotional health and gang connections. The last stop is the unit that matches their rating.

Open the CDCR online locator to follow the move. Our state prison page explains each unit.

13. Does the Siskiyou jail post mugshots online?

The Siskiyou County roster has no mugshots; it shows who Siskiyou is holding and why.

See Penal Code 13665 for the law. Social media is what it covers. Nonviolent arrests are the main target. Those mugshots can't go on social media. Photos posted there expire after 14 days. Exceptions exist for fugitives and public threats. Jail websites are outside this law. Even so, many sheriffs leave photos off.

For a request for a mugshot that is not public, reporters should reach the sheriff's office, 530-842-8300. Want an ICE booking photo? Use ICE's online records request, then wait for approval. The federal government doesn't hand out booking photos to the press or the community. The Marshals Service, which takes them, shares one only in narrow cases: to catch a fugitive or escapee, for pressing community safety, or when release would help track them down or alert the community.

15. Does an I-5 warrant arrest near Dunsmuir end on South Oregon Street?

It might. Warrant arrests along Interstate 5, from Dunsmuir to Montague, are booked at the South Oregon Street jail in the county seat. The Fourth Street court clerk (530-842-0411) can help with a new date, and the court's online services lead to case information. The Sheriff's Office checks warrants by phone and searches statewide records for callers. Facing one yourself? Counsel in Mount Shasta can set your surrender, so you arrive on your own terms and the judge sees you showed up.
