How does bail work in Adams County?

  • Who sets bail: the Brighton jail can't pick the figure; a court does.
  • Fast review: in most cases, a court looks at bond no later than 48 hours after someone reaches the Brighton jail.
  • Signature bond: the one held signs a written promise to appear in court.
  • Full payment: a friend posts the entire bond at the detention center or court.
  • Agent fees top out at 15 percent of the total, or $50 when that is higher.
  • Pledging property: in-state land counts only if the equity is one and a half times the bond.
  • Conditions: the court can order visits with a pretrial officer or staying away from certain people or a curfew.
  • Still held? A hold from elsewhere may stop release.
  • Keep every hearing date — missing one can lead to new arrest orders plus bond forfeiture.
  • Before paying: call 303-654-1850 to ask for the posted bond.

What happens after a federal arrest in Adams County?

Any federal case out of Adams County doesn't go through the state courts. Court dates are at the Alfred A. Arraj U.S. Courthouse in Denver, 901 19th Street, Denver, CO 80294 — the court clerk answers at 303-844-3433. Within a day or so after booking, your family member meets a U.S. magistrate judge for the first hearing.

There is no fixed bail list. Rather, the magistrate schedules a short detention hearing to find out whether your family member may go free pending trial and on what terms. Before trial, many federal prisoners are housed in a nearby jail under contract with the U.S. Marshals. For the jail's name, ring the Marshals at 303-728-7800. With a prison sentence, the BOP takes over and picks the federal prison. Later, its BOP inmate locator lists the place.

What if ICE puts a Adams County inmate on hold?

First: During booking, the fingerprints are checked in federal databases that ICE searches.

Next: If ICE wants the one held, it delivers an ICE hold request via Form I-247A to jail staff.

Then: That form seeks as many as 48 more hours after they would have walked out. Weekends and holidays count in those hours.

But: Colorado's law, C.R.S. 24-76.6-102, states jails cannot keep anyone past release solely on ICE's request. As a result, Adams County frees the person at the normal time except when a court order exists.

Finally: ICE may come at release time and pick the defendant up. Otherwise, your loved one simply leaves.

Find ICE detainees through the online locator. Enter their A-number with birth country.

ICE lists the Denver Contract Detention Facility at 3130 North Oakland Street, Aurora, CO 80010, phone 303-361-6612.

The Denver field office is at 12445 East Caley Avenue, Centennial, CO 80111; phone 720-873-2899.

Are Adams County mugshots posted online?

See the Adams booking search for the person; Adams may not post mugshots there. Journalists seeking a mugshot that is not posted may ask the Adams County sheriff's office at 303-654-1850.

Any ICE mugshot must be sought on ICE's online FOIA form; then ICE must give its approval.

Federal mugshots never reach the general public and the news media. One exception applies: the U.S. Marshals Service, in charge of federal mugshots, can put out one for a fugitive to aid in finding them or put people on guard; it may also do so in case of an immediate threat to others.
