  • Judge's call: in a Fort Collins case, a judge fixes the kind of bond and the dollar figure.

  • Judges may add terms: set reporting dates, testing or no-contact orders.

Any federal charge from Larimer County is not handled in the local courts. Hearings are held inside the Alfred A. Arraj U.S. Courthouse in Denver, 901 19th Street, Denver, CO 80294; its clerk answers at 303-844-3433. Soon after being arrested, the accused sees a U.S. magistrate judge at a first appearance.

There is no set bail list. Rather, the magistrate holds a formal detention hearing and rules on whether your loved one stays locked up until trial and on what terms. Before trial, most federal defendants are kept in a nearby jail working with the U.S. Marshals. For which jail, ring the Marshals at 303-728-7800. Once prison is ordered for a Larimer case, the federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) picks one. Next, the BOP inmate locator displays where they are.

14. How does an ICE detainer work in Larimer County?

Step 1: As part of booking, prints get run through federal systems that ICE can see.

Step 2: Once ICE shows interest, it issues a hold request with Form I-247A to the Larimer jail.

Step 3: That form requests 48 added hours at most after the planned release. The clock runs nonstop; Saturdays, Sundays and holidays still count.

Step 4: State law in Colorado, C.R.S. 24-76.6-102, makes clear a jail cannot keep anyone longer only because ICE asked. That means Larimer County has to let them go on time except when a court order says otherwise.

Step 5: ICE officers can arrive at release time and take custody. If ICE does not come, the person goes free.

Look up ICE detainees with the detainee locator. Type in their A-number and their home country.
