- Who decides: a judge chooses the terms.
- The 48-hour rule: Colorado law requires a bond hearing about 48 hours after someone arrives at the Aspen jail, for most cases.
- Personal recognizance: sometimes a judge lets that person go on just a signature to show up.
- Paying cash: every dollar of the bond goes to the court.
- Surety bonds: state rules cap the agent's fee at 15 percent, with $50 as the floor, and it is kept.
- A home in the state can be pledged only when equity covers 150 percent of the bond.
- Conditions: the court may order regular pretrial reporting or no contact with a victim.
- Other holds: a hold from another county may still keep the arrested person in custody after bond is posted.
- No-shows: missing court can bring a warrant; the bond is lost.

Back to questions ↑13. What if someone in Pitkin County faces federal charges?
A federal arrest from Pitkin County won't remain in the local courts. Court dates take place inside the Aspinall federal building in Grand Junction, 400 Rood Avenue, Suite 309, Grand Junction, CO 81501 — its clerk answers at 970-245-5396. Not long after booking, the charged person appears before a U.S. magistrate judge for an initial appearance.
There's no bail schedule in federal court. Rather, the judge holds a detention hearing to see if your loved one walks out until trial and with what rules. During the case, most federal detainees are housed in a jail close by that houses people for the Marshals Service. To ask their location, get in touch with the U.S. Marshals on 970-243-5210. Once a court imposes prison time, the Bureau of Prisons (BOP) takes charge. From then on, the BOP inmate locator shows where they are.
Back to questions ↑14. What should families know about a Pitkin County ICE hold?
First: As part of booking, prints are checked in federal systems shared with ICE.
Next: If ICE decides to act, it issues a hold using Form I-247A to the Pitkin jail.
Then: That detainer asks for up to 48 more hours beyond the time of release. Those hours run without stopping, with holidays and weekends counted.
But: State law in Colorado, C.R.S. 24-76.6-102, makes clear jails cannot keep a person longer solely because ICE made a request. As a result, Pitkin County releases the arrested person on schedule except when another legal reason is in place.
Finally: ICE agents may come as the detained person leaves and take custody. If not, the defendant walks out.
Find someone ICE holds with the locator. Enter their A-number and birth country.

Back to questions ↑15. When is someone moved from Pitkin County to state prison?
A prison sentence begins with a wait in the local jail before CDOC transfer. CDOC intake sets the custody level after medical, mental health and risk checks.
Later, CDOC assigns the arrested person to a prison that fits their needs. CDOC's offender search shows the facility; our state prison page shows contact details.
Back to questions ↑16. Does Pitkin County show mugshots online?
Search the Pitkin jail search. Don't count on Pitkin mugshots being there. Reporters seeking a booking photo not shown publicly may get in touch with the Pitkin County sheriff's office at 970-920-5300.
Any ICE mugshot can only be filed for through ICE's records request page, and ICE has to approve the request.
Federal mugshots are kept private from ordinary people and the media. One exception exists: the U.S. Marshals Service, the office in charge of federal booking photos, may release a photo of someone on the run where it helps make an arrest or warn individuals, or for an urgent threat to public safety.
