St. Johns County Jail

For inmate information at any hour of the day or night, call the 764-bed St. Johns County Jail at 904-209-1443.

When someone is arrested in this county for a misdemeanor or felony, they are taken to this jail for booking and processing. If the charges call for it, they stay here until they post bond, are released on their own recognizance, or are ordered held until their trial is resolved.

To see who is currently being held, check the facility’s roster with the inmate search tool.

A sentence of less than one year is served here in the county jail. Anyone sentenced to more than a year is sent to the Florida State Prison System or the Federal Bureau of Prisons.

On this page you’ll find how to search the official jail roster, directions to the jail, and details on inmate services, including the visitation schedule and rules, putting money on an inmate’s account, sending letters, inmate phone calls, voicemail, email and text messaging, tablet rentals, posting bail, and ordering commissary.

Write down the inmate’s booking number or jail ID as soon as you find it, since you’ll often need it to send mail or set up communication. If it isn’t listed online, call St. Johns County Jail at 904-209-1443 and ask for it.

You can search the Official Jail Inmate Roster to locate an inmate in the St. Johns County Jail and see their charges, bond amount, visitation eligibility, and mugshot. For anything the roster doesn’t answer, call the jail at 904-209-1443. You can also look up arrest warrants for St. Johns County and all of Florida, and search criminal court cases in St. Johns County and the other participating Florida counties.

St. Johns County Jail Inmate Search

Under the Florida Constitution, most people charged with a crime in St. Johns County and across the state are entitled to pretrial release on reasonable conditions. The exceptions are capital and life felonies when the proof is evident or the presumption is great, and cases where no conditions would protect the community. Many misdemeanor and traffic arrests end with a notice to appear instead of bail. For everything else, the Florida Supreme Court sets a uniform statewide bond schedule listing a minimum bond amount for each type of offense.

The easiest way to find out an inmate’s bail at the St. Johns County Jail is to call the jail at 904-209-1443. If you know the charge, you can check the Florida uniform statewide bond schedule for 2026 to see the minimum bond. Each of Florida’s judicial circuits may set higher amounts, and a judge at first appearance, usually within 24 hours of arrest, can change the bond. Some serious charges require seeing a judge before any release. The county accepts cash, a surety bond, or a property bond, or can release an offender on personal recognizance.

The St. Johns County Jail holds a license for 764 inmates, but the actual count is often higher, especially on weekends. Most city and county jails in Florida have a monthly turnover of at least 35-40% of their inmates, another 25-30% every 90 days, another 15-20% every six months, and roughly 8-9% who stay six to twelve months. Stays of more than twelve months usually involve serious charges such as murder or rape. Since preparing those cases for trial takes time, offenders arrested in this county are held at one of the St. Johns County facilities much longer.

Every year, St. Johns County law enforcement agencies arrest and detain approximately 17,080 offenders.

We also provide photos of the jail that we have collected over the years.

The St. Johns County Detention Center in Florida has a capacity of 764 beds. It houses both male and female inmates awaiting pre-trial hearings. The facility is considered a regional medium security jail. The St. Johns County Jail in Florida is located at the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office Central Address. The contact number for the Detention Center is (904) 209-1443, and the Booking Department can be reached at (904) 209-3125. Inmate contact information and an inmate search is available online.

The St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office runs the county’s jail at 3955 Lewis Speedway, St. Augustine, FL 32084, just off U.S. 1 north of downtown. Call the detention center at (904) 209-1443, or booking at (904) 209-3125. The Main Detention Unit has 664 beds and houses men and women waiting for their cases to be resolved. On the same operation, the Community Work Release Center (CWRC) has 100 beds for men sentenced to 364 days or less who qualify for work release. The Sheriff’s Office says inmates can join more than 15 recovery, education and certificate programs, including AA and NA, GED prep, parenting, anger management, domestic violence prevention and weekly visits from over 16 church and ministry groups.

Anyone arrested in St. Johns County is booked here. The county is in Florida’s Seventh Judicial Circuit, and first appearance before a judge must happen within 24 hours (Florida Rule 3.130). That’s when bond eligibility is decided, and the inmate handbook confirms it. As of this writing the sheriff’s online inmate search was showing as temporarily down, so call booking at (904) 209-3125 for custody and bond information if it isn’t working.

Pretrial release in Florida starts from Article I, Section 14 of the state constitution: most people are entitled to reasonable conditions, with exceptions for capital or life felonies with strong proof and for defendants who can’t be safely released on any terms. The Florida Supreme Court’s 2026 uniform bond schedule sets minimum pre-hearing amounts; the Seventh Circuit’s chief judge can require more, and the first appearance judge may set something different. A few serious charges require a hearing before release, and minor misdemeanors often end with a notice to appear. Money orders must be verified before a bond is processed, so leave extra time. The sheriff’s search page also warns about scammers posing as bail bondsmen and links a list of registered bond companies. Florida regulators set the premium for a state bond at 10% of the bail.

St. Johns County has its own warrant search, and the Warrants Division is at (904) 209-1440. For a statewide look, use the FDLE wanted persons search. Neither list catches every warrant.

Visiting is all by video through SmartJailMail (Smart Communications). Each inmate gets four free 30-minute onsite visits per week at the visitation center, Monday through Friday from 8 to 11 a.m. and 1 to 4 p.m. Remote visits from a phone or computer run daily from 8 to 11 a.m., 1 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 10 p.m. in 15- or 30-minute blocks at $0.25 per minute. Inmates can also start “visits on demand” with approved visitors. Appointments need 24 hours’ notice. Dress appropriately, don’t record or screenshot, and get approval before including children.

All non-legal mail is scanned, and originals are destroyed after 30 days. Send it to Smart Communications/St. Johns County Jail, the inmate’s name and ID number, PO Box 9102, Seminole, FL 33775-9151. Phone calls cost $0.16 per minute plus tax, and electronic messages are $0.50 each, both through SmartJailMail. Add money online at JailATM, at the facility kiosk (open 24/7) or at the video visitation center. Property can be picked up weekdays from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; call (904) 209-1430 first.

We couldn’t confirm a Sunshine Bus route that stops at the jail, so plan to drive or check with the county’s transit service. Gas is close on U.S. 1: Circle K at 4564 U.S. 1 North and GATE at 4075 U.S. 1. For food, Hazel’s Hot Dogs is at 2400 N. Ponce de Leon Boulevard, and there’s a Chick-fil-A a few miles south at 1752 U.S. 1.

How Do You Deposit Money for an Inmate in the St. Johns County Jail?

There are FOUR options for putting money on an inmate's books:

Option 1 - Dropping Money at the Jail
Bring money to the jail in person.
Either the jail personnel will process the Inmate Account payment or you will use a Jail ATM self-serve kiosk in the lobbies that accepts cash, debit or credit cards.

Option 2 - Deposit Inmate Money Online
St. Johns County Jail uses Jail ATM to process all online deposits to an inmate's account. The company charges you a small fee for doing so, but the fee probably isn't as much as gas and parking would cost to take it to the jail in person.

Option 3 - Mail the Inmate Deposit to the Jail
Mailing a deposit takes more time to process than the other methods but can be done if you live too far away to bring it in person and you don't have a debit/credit card for online deposits. Never send cash. Always send a Money Order from the US Post Office, a reputable bank or Western Union. Call the St. Johns County Jail first as they may want you to do this online or at the jail kiosk instead.
Make the Money Order out to the payee the jail names (check with the jail first) and put their Inmate ID# in memo section of the Money Order. Never mail cash or a personal check.
