Florida county jails and state prisons

Florida has 67 counties. The sheriff runs the jail in each one. Miami-Dade is the exception that proves the rule: corrections there is a county department, not a sheriff’s office. Large counties run several buildings. A small Panhandle or inland county often has one jail and sends overflow to a neighbor. City police departments have holding rooms, not county jails.

The state stopped inspecting county jails in 1996. Standards now come from the Florida Model Jail Standards Commission, set up by the Florida Sheriffs Association and the Florida Association of Counties. The current manual took effect January 1, 2026. Florida Statutes section 951.2302 requires two inspections a year, at least 120 days apart. One covers the full standards and is scheduled. The other looks for serious violations and is unannounced. Certified jail inspectors and medical inspectors do the work. A serious violation is one that poses an immediate danger to life, health, or safety.

Jails in Florida hold people before trial and people serving a misdemeanor. A first-degree misdemeanor can mean up to a year in the county jail. A second-degree misdemeanor tops out at 60 days. A felony sentence of more than a year goes to the Florida Department of Corrections. A federal sentence goes to the Bureau of Prisons, which has institutions at Coleman, Miami, Tallahassee, Marianna, and Yazoo-adjacent camps that take Florida cases.

How many county jails are there in Florida?

There is one sheriff’s system, or in Miami-Dade a county corrections department, for each of the 67 counties. The building count is higher, because Broward, Palm Beach, Orange, Hillsborough, Duval, and Miami-Dade each run more than one jail. When a jail holds someone for another county, for the state, or for the U.S. Marshals, it bills a contract rate. That rate is not a statewide fee. Growth in Central Florida and along the coasts is what fills jails built in the 1980s and 1990s.

State prison is a separate map. The Department of Corrections is the third-largest state prison system in the country, with a budget of about $3.8 billion, nearly 24,000 employees, and more than 90,000 people in custody. It lists 134 facilities: 49 major institutions, 16 annexes, 7 contractor-operated prisons, 27 work camps, work-release centers, and smaller camps, grouped into four regions. Florida State Prison at Raiford is the maximum-security prison. Women enter through the Florida Women’s Reception Center in Ocala.

How many juvenile detention centers are there in Florida?

The Department of Juvenile Justice operates 21 regional juvenile detention centers, split across north, central, and south regions. They hold youth who are waiting on a court date or on a bed in a residential program. Leon Regional in Tallahassee, Miami-Dade Regional, Hillsborough West in Tampa, Volusia Regional in Daytona Beach, and the Southwest Florida center in Fort Myers are examples. A center serves a cluster of counties, not just the city it sits in. Miami-Dade Regional also covers Monroe. A longer commitment is a different placement: a DJJ residential program, not the detention center.

Detention centers are secure, and they provide school, medical care, and mental-health screening. Search the county of the arrest. The listing shows which of the 21 centers that county uses.

What the first days in a Florida county jail are like

Booking is a queue: identity, prints, a medical screen, a search, property bagged, one call. In a South Florida jail the holding cell is hot. In the Panhandle it is not. The person has not been convicted. The pod still runs on counts. Food is plain, the uniform does not fit, and sleep is broken. Withdrawal from alcohol, fentanyl, or methamphetamine can start before first appearance.

Deputies who apply the rules the same way to everyone run a quieter floor. Uneven enforcement is how contraband moves. Miami-Dade, Broward, and Orange can separate by risk and by gender. A 40-bed rural jail often cannot, and a full jail there means a transfer and a longer drive for the family.

Most Florida jails sell tablet time, video visits, and deposits through a vendor. Those accounts can be shut off. Each county page on this site lists the jail phone, the vendor, and the way to send money for that sheriff’s office.
