Most defendants in DeSoto County have a constitutional right to be released before trial on reasonable conditions. Florida makes exceptions for capital and life felonies where the proof is evident, and for cases where no conditions would protect the community. For jail information, call (863) 993-4710. South county residents can use (941) 743-6777. It’s a small rural jail. The sheriff doesn’t publish its capacity or opening date, so call if you need those details. It holds adults arrested in DeSoto County who are awaiting trial or serving county sentences of up to one year. Longer sentences go to the Florida Department of Corrections.
People are booked here after arrest and see a judge within 24 hours for first appearance (Florida Rule 3.130). DeSoto is in the Twelfth Judicial Circuit with Manatee and Sarasota. The sheriff’s inmate search shows current charges and bond amounts at the bottom of each record. You post bond at the jail lobby on the east side of the sheriff’s office. On bail generally: Florida’s constitution (Art. I, §14) gives most defendants a right to reasonable pretrial release, except for capital or life felonies with strong proof or when no conditions can protect the public. Before first appearance, the Florida Supreme Court’s 2026 uniform bond schedule (AOSC25-69) sets minimum amounts. The chief judge can set higher ones, the first appearance judge isn’t bound by it, and some charges require seeing a judge first (§§903.011, 903.046, 907.041). Minor misdemeanors often end with a notice to appear. If you use a licensed bail bond agent, Florida’s Department of Financial Services says the premium on a state bond is 10% of the bail amount. There are no in-person or contact visits. All personal visits are remote video visits through Paytel, which you book with a Paytel/HomeWAV account online or in the app. When you set up the account, you’ll upload a photo ID. Visits run in half-hour blocks from 1 to 10 p.m. daily. Children under 18 need an adult present, and provocative or offensive clothing isn’t allowed. If you were released from jail within the last 60 days, you can’t visit until 60 days have passed. See the visitation page for details.
Mail goes to a processing center, not the jail: P.O. Box 18247, Greensboro, NC 27419, with Facility ID 5050 and the inmate’s name and ID number. Letters are limited to 10 pages. They’re scanned for inmates to read on tablets, and the originals are destroyed. To add money, use the kiosk in the sheriff’s main lobby or commissarydeposit.com, or mail a money order. Phones are through PayTel at (800) 729-8355. The jail doesn’t accept items dropped off for inmates. The inmate services page has the rest.
For warrants, try the FDLE wanted persons search. It won’t show every warrant, so call the sheriff if you’re unsure. We couldn’t find a fixed-route bus serving the jail, so plan to drive. Nearby, Speedway at 201 S Brevard Ave and Circle K at 405 N Brevard Ave sell gas, and Burger King at 1016 E Oak Street and McDonald’s at 1203 E Oak Street are a few minutes east.

How inteleMESSAGE Works
- The DeSoto County Jail inmate must contact you first in order to activate messaging for your account.
- Once an inmate has messaged you, you are then able to visit the Pay Tel website, log in, read and respond to his or her messages.
- When you log in and follow the inteleMESSAGE™ link, you will be asked if you want to accept messages from your DeSoto County inmate. If you accept, you will then be able to read any inmate message that has been sent to you.
- An on-line prepaid or direct bill account is required to use messaging.
- You must visit the Pay Tel website, login to your account, and follow the inteleMESSAGE™ link in order to send or check for messages. You will not be notified of messages by any other method.
- All messages are subject to monitoring and review and should never be used for privileged attorney-inmate communications.
- If a message is rejected for any reason, the sender’s account will be automatically credited for the cost of the message.
- Free messages which are rejected will not be refunded or restored.
Cost to send messages
- The sender of the message is charged $.50 per message. Rates are subject to change.
- For friends and family outside of a facility, this amount is deducted from the prepaid account balance or charged to your direct bill account.
- For inmates, the amount is charged to the inmate and deducted from the inmate’s debit account.
- There is no charge to read a message that was sent to you.
