The Florida Constitution entitles most defendants in Walton County to reasonable pretrial release. Release can be denied for capital or life felonies when the proof is evident, or when no conditions would protect the community. Many misdemeanor and traffic arrests end with a notice to appear. For other offenses, bond starts at the amount on the Florida Supreme Court’s uniform statewide bond schedule.

Most city and county jails in Florida turn over at least 35-40% of their population monthly, another 25-30% every 90 days, and another 15-20% every six months. Approximately 8-9% stay incarcerated between six and twelve months. Inmates held longer than twelve months are usually facing serious charges like rape or murder, and because those cases take longer to prepare for trial, offenders arrested in this county remain in custody at one of the Walton County facilities much longer.

The Walton County Jail, operated by the Walton County Sheriff’s Office, is at 40 Sheriff Circle, DeFuniak Springs, FL 32433, north of downtown off State Road 83. Reach the jail directly at (850) 892-8196, or call the Sheriff’s non-emergency line at (850) 892-8111. It is a 596-bed facility with an average daily population of about 500 men and women. The Florida Corrections Accreditation Commission first accredited it in February 2010. People arrested anywhere in the county, from Freeport and Paxton to South Walton’s beach communities, are booked here. The jail holds people awaiting trial and people serving county sentences of up to a year. Longer sentences are served in the state prison system.
Walton is part of the First Judicial Circuit. Every person booked sees a judge at first appearance within 24 hours of arrest, as Florida Rule 3.130 requires. The Florida Constitution (Art. I, §14) promises pretrial release on reasonable conditions in most cases. It carves out capital and life felonies when the proof is evident or the presumption great, plus cases where no conditions can protect the public. Before first appearance, bond amounts follow the Florida Supreme Court’s 2026 uniform bond schedule, and the circuit’s chief judge can set higher local amounts. The judge doesn’t have to follow the schedule, and some charges need a hearing before anyone can be released. Small misdemeanors often end with a notice to appear.
The Sheriff’s Office accepts bail bonds only from the agents on its approved bondsmen list. An agent who isn’t on the list must bring a certified power of attorney filed with the Walton County Clerk, a Florida bail bond license, a driver’s license and complete business information. Cash bonds can also be posted remotely through Cash Bonds Online at (888) 726-6301. Tell them you’re paying for the Walton County Jail, Florida. Bail agents charge the premium filed with the state under §648.33, which is 10% on state bonds with a $100 minimum, and it isn’t refunded.

On-site visitors need valid ID and should dress modestly: shirt and shoes required, shorts no shorter than mid-thigh, skirts at the knee or longer, and no tight or see-through tops.

The jail runs a GED program, vocational training in heavy equipment, forklift, construction trades, CDL, OSHA and ServSafe, farming, parenting classes, “Living in Balance” substance abuse treatment, and help getting birth certificates, Social Security cards and Florida IDs. Individual and group mental health counseling is also available. For warrants, search FDLE’s wanted persons list, which doesn’t include every warrant, and call the Sheriff’s Office with questions. No fixed-route bus serves the jail, so visitors drive. Nearby, there’s a Gulf station at 4483 FL-83 and Cumberland Farms at 1463 FL-83. Ed’s Restaurant, 1324 US-90, is a longtime local burger spot, and Sonic is at 1508 US-331.

- All mail sent to an inmate at the Walton County Jail must include the sender's name and mailing address in the top left corner of the envelope or postcard.
- All mail must include the facility's address, as well as the inmate's name and assigned number.
- Failure to include your return address will most likely result in your mail NOT being delivered and your letter destroyed.

Emailing Messages & Photos
Facility_name_1} contracts with Viapath/GTL/GettingOut, the same service that handles iInmate Phone Systems and Video Visitation, for sending secure messages and photos between you and your inmate.
If you are not already registered, do so here, or Log in.
Then use the Facility Finder to:
1. Select Walton County Jail,
2. Add your inmate to your list of contacts,
3. Add a credit or debit card to cover your costs.
- Messages can be up to 500 characters long, including punctuation. At the bottom of your message there is a 'character countdown' feature.
- After you click the “CONTINUE” button, you can review the cost to send your message to your inmate. You can also attach credits for your inmate to reply to your message.
