Every Florida county, including Hernando County, follows the same basic bail rules. Most defendants have a constitutional right to pretrial release on reasonable conditions, except those charged with capital or life felonies when the proof is evident, or those no conditions could safely release. Many minor misdemeanors and traffic offenses end with a notice to appear. Bond amounts for other charges come from a uniform statewide bond schedule set by the Florida Supreme Court.
If you need to know an inmate’s bail, call the Hernando County Detention Center at 352-544-2334. For the minimum bond on a given charge, see the Florida uniform statewide bond schedule for 2026; judicial circuits can require more, and the judge at first appearance can set a different amount. Bail can be posted in cash, with a surety bond, or with a property bond, and some offenders are released on personal recognizance.
The Hernando County Detention Center is licensed for 744 inmates at any given time, but it often has to make room for many more, especially on weekends. At most city and county jails in Florida, at least 35-40% of the inmate population turns over monthly, another 25-30% every 90 days, and another 15-20% every six months, while about 8-9% stay incarcerated between six and twelve months. Inmates held longer than twelve months are usually facing serious charges such as rape or murder. Because those cases take longer to prepare for trial, offenders arrested in this county remain in one of the Hernando County facilities much longer.
Each year, Hernando County law enforcement agencies arrest and detain approximately 16,080 offenders.

⇓ Learn more ⇓ Show lessThe Hernando County Detention Center, located at 16425 Spring Hill Drive in Brooksville Florida is the central booking and intake center for the county sheriff's office and all the police departments operating in Hernando County. The jail can be reached by phone 24 hours a day by calling 352-544-2334. The inmates in their custody can be as high as 744, which is their rated capacity. Both males and females are incarcerated here, most are individuals who were recently arrested, can't afford bail and are awaiting trial. Others are already sentenced and have sentences of less than one year, and still others, although a smaller number, are juveniles between the ages of 14 and 17 who have been adjudicated for treatment as adults charged or sentenced on misdemeanor and felony crimes.
The Hernando County Detention Center was originally constructed in 1991, so it's well over 30 years old. It has undergone several minor renovations and small expansions over the years, but is currently at a critical point. Not only does the Sheriff want to expand the jail to at least 1,000 beds to prepare the expected growth in population in {county_extended], but he is concerned about the plumbing and general infrastructure in the existing buildings. In addition, there is currently inadequate housing for those in need of mental health services and those of a disciplinary population, no space for juvenile detainees, and a lack of storage needs in the warehouse and kitchen, among others. The site, which sits on about 30 acres, has an additional 10.5 acres of land to expand into. Costs range from $45 million to $400 million.

The Hernando County Detention Center is run by the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office at 16425 Spring Hill Drive, Brooksville, FL 34604, near the Brooksville–Tampa Bay Regional Airport. The main line is (352) 544-2334. It is authorized for 812 inmates and holds men, women, and juveniles aged 14 to 17 who are being prosecuted as adults. People end up here for a few reasons: they were arrested without a bond, couldn’t post bail, are waiting to transfer to another jurisdiction, or are serving a county sentence of less than a year. The detention division provides medical care, life skills and treatment programs. It earned PREA accreditation in 2024 and Florida Corrections Accreditation Commission reaccreditation in June 2025.
The sheriff’s inmate search lists who is in custody. The sheriff also keeps a local warrants search. For warrants from elsewhere in Florida, use FDLE’s wanted persons list, and remember that no online list is complete. Hernando County is in the Fifth Judicial Circuit. First appearance hearings usually start at 1 p.m. every day and can last two to four hours. Someone arrested after 6 a.m. on a weekday, or after 5 a.m. on a weekend or holiday, goes to the next day’s hearing. (Florida Rule 3.130 calls for first appearance within 24 hours of arrest.) Family members may attend the hearing and should arrive at least 15 minutes early.
The sheriff explains that bond amounts come from a schedule set by the chief judge. Domestic charges must be reviewed by a judge first, and warrant arrests carry whatever bond the signing judge set. Statewide, the Florida Supreme Court’s uniform bond schedule for 2026 sets minimum amounts that chief judges may raise. It doesn’t bind the first appearance judge. Florida law also requires a judge before release on certain serious charges (sections 903.011, 903.046, 907.041). Article I, Section 14 of the Florida Constitution protects most people’s right to reasonable pretrial release, except in capital or life felony cases with strong proof, or when no conditions can protect the community. Small misdemeanors frequently end with a notice to appear. To post a cash bond, pay in the detention center lobby or online through GovPayNet (also by phone at (888) 604-7888). Bail agents charge a state-set 10% premium (Florida DFS), with a minimum often around $100. Keep a few things in mind while you wait. People arrested for DUI or BUI must stay at least eight hours. No one is released during count times: 5:30–6:30 a.m., 11:30 a.m.–12:30 p.m., 5:30–6:30 p.m. and 11:30 p.m.–12:30 a.m.
All visits are non-contact video through Smart Communications (smartinmate.com, (727) 349-1561). Each person gets four free 30-minute visits a week. Onsite visits are Monday through Friday, 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Remote visits run from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m., except 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Only one visitor is allowed per visit, plus an infant under one, and you need a government photo ID showing your date of birth. The dress code rules out tank tops, low-cut or see-through clothing, shorts above mid-thigh and sunglasses. There’s parking on site.
Letters and postcards go to HCSO – SCH, [name and booking ID], PO Box 1848, Pinellas Park, FL 33780. Electronic messages cost $0.75 and photos $1.50 through SmartInmate. Phone calls cost $0.10 a minute. For money, Access Corrections takes deposits at accesscorrections.com, by phone at (800) 546-6283, or at the cash-only lobby kiosk. Money orders can be mailed to the jail, attention Inmate Accounts. Property must be picked up within five business days, and the person has to sign a release form first. You can book a pickup time through the sheriff’s property pickup sign-up.
TheBus doesn’t list a stop at the detention center. Route 6 has an “Airport” timepoint in this area, so call TheBus at (352) 754-4444 to confirm the closest stop. Most visitors drive. There’s a 7-Eleven Fuel just west at 16161 Spring Hill Dr and a Circle K at 3275 Broad St. Food is easiest near the Suncoast Parkway: McDonald’s at 15050 Spring Hill Dr or Wendy’s at 14339 Spring Hill Dr.
