Inmates held longer than twelve months are usually facing serious charges such as rape or murder. It is the booking and intake point for every law enforcement agency in the county. It holds men and women charged with or sentenced for misdemeanors and felonies. It also holds juveniles who have been adjudicated as adults. People here are either waiting for trial or serving sentences of less than a year. Longer prison terms are served in the state system. The Sheriff’s Office doesn’t publish capacity or an opening date. (Lancaster Correctional Institution, also in Gilchrist County, is a state prison and a separate place.)
After booking, the person sees a judge within 24 hours for first appearance, and Gilchrist County is part of the Eighth Judicial Circuit.
Under Article I, Section 14 of the Florida Constitution, pretrial release on reasonable conditions is the norm. The exceptions are capital and life felonies with strong proof, and cases where no conditions would protect the public. Minimum bonds before first appearance come from the Florida Supreme Court’s 2026 uniform bond schedule. The chief judge can set higher amounts locally, and the first appearance judge can depart from them. Certain serious charges require a judge’s decision before release. The Sheriff’s site doesn’t explain how to post a cash bond, so call the jail first. If you use a bondsman, Florida sets the premium on a state bond at 10% of the bail (DFS).

No fixed-route bus serves the jail, so most visitors drive. In Trenton, you can fill up at SunStop Market at 1209 E Wade Street or Marathon at 414 W Wade Street. For food, there’s McDonald’s at 209 E Wade Street and Burger Spot at 204 W Wade Street.
