While the Washington County Jail has a licensed capacity of 125, it is often forced to make room for many more inmates, especially on weekends. City and county jails in Florida generally turn over at least 35-40% of their inmates each month, another 25-30% every 90 days, and another 15-20% every six months, and about 8-9% stay incarcerated six to twelve months. Those held longer than twelve months are usually charged with serious crimes such as murder or rape. Because those cases take longer to prepare for trial, offenders arrested in this county are held at one of the Washington County facilities much longer.

Washington County is in the Fourteenth Judicial Circuit, and first appearance takes place within 24 hours of arrest under Florida Rule 3.130. The Florida Constitution (Art. I, §14) gives most people a right to pretrial release on reasonable conditions. The exceptions are capital or life felonies when the proof is evident or the presumption great, and cases where no conditions can protect the community. Starting bond amounts come from the Florida Supreme Court’s 2026 uniform bond schedule. The circuit can set higher local amounts, some serious charges require a judge first, and the judge may depart from the schedule. Small misdemeanors often end in a notice to appear.
You can post a cash bond through the jail. Ask the Sheriff’s Office which payment forms it accepts, because we couldn’t confirm them. You can also hire a licensed bail agent, who must charge the rate filed with the state under §648.33: 10% of the bond with a $100 minimum on state charges, non-refundable. There’s no fixed-route bus in Chipley, so most visitors drive. Right around the courthouse area, you’ll find a Marathon at 1303 Jackson Ave. and an Exxon at 1369 Jackson Ave. BJ’s Grill at 1176 E. Jackson Ave. serves breakfast and lunch on weekdays until 2 p.m. For later hours, Wendy’s is at 1715 Main St. near I-10.

Homewav is the same company that handles the inmate phone system, video visitations, email and texting and digital letters.

- Phone Calls - Inmates may make calls directly from their tablet allowing for more privacy. The rates are the same as the phones in the unit, and the calls are still recorded and monitored.

- Video Messages and Video Calls - Send and receive video messages and have video visits and calls with inmate.
- Job Search - Inmates have the ability to see what jobs are available when they are released.
- Education - Free educational platform and course catalog that provides thousands of educational resources, including GED courses.
- Self Help -Inmates have daily access to mental health and addiction recovery programming.
- Music - Top-40, Hip-Hop, Country, Rock, Gospel, and more.
- Law Library - Legal research with up-to-date case information.
- eBooks - Thousands of available titles.
- Religion - Religious resources for spiritual guidance.
- Games - Inmates can play their favorite games. Available through monthly subscriptions
- Facility Services - Digital access to submitted forms, requests, facility documents, and notifications from staff.
