Coweta County Jail inmates: finding a booking, video visits, postcards, deposits, calls, medical rules, holds and transfers

Greison Trail's lockup, 560 Greison Trail, Newnan, GA 30263, belongs to the Coweta County Sheriff's Office Jail Division and never closes. Its population is people waiting on bond, a trial, a sentence or a ride to state prison. A quick name lookup in our inmate search tells relatives who is inside.

Once our inmate search turns up the person, save the inmate number; postcards, deposits and video visits all ask for it. Someone booked an hour ago may still be missing from results. Coweta's sheriff warns that callers pretending to be the jail, rather than the inmate, are running a scam.

Questions about bond, holds and the next hearing go to 770-253-1664; have the full legal name ready. Bonds are explained on our bail page, hearings on our court page. Further down, this page explains video visits, postcards, deposits, calls, medical care and transfers.

1. How can I tell whether someone is in the Coweta County Jail?

Results in our inmate search normally give a booking date, the charges and any bond. Greison Trail's jail is at 560 Greison Trail, Newnan, GA 30263, phone 770-253-1664, the same address and number the Department of Corrections gives for it.

Bookings still in progress can be missing from results. Try nicknames, hyphenated surnames and maiden names. Because two people can share a name, save the inmate number after spotting the right match. A person picked up on a warrant from elsewhere, or by federal agents, may be sitting in a different jail, and whoever made the arrest can say which one. Searching again after a few hours often turns up a booking that was still being processed the first time.

2. How are visits arranged?

Coweta's jail stopped face-to-face visiting, according to the sheriff. Families now register online and book video sessions, following the steps on our visitation page. One free 15-minute video session per week is allowed for each inmate.

Tablets and kiosks open for sessions twice daily: a morning block ending at one in the afternoon and an evening block from half past six until eleven. Anyone under 18 must have an adult present. Dress rules ban short shorts, tank tops, see-through fabric and bare shoulders. Rule breakers lose the session and may be blocked from future ones. Segregated inmates see only lawyers, officers and chaplains.

3. Can I write or send messages?

Other than legal mail and items specially approved, everything mailed in must be a metered or pre-stamped postcard, addressed to the processing center named on our mail page and showing the inmate's whole name and number.

Postcards sent straight to 560 Greison Trail have gone back to senders since January 1, 2021. Letters from attorneys count as legal mail. Outside items of every kind get returned. Staff read everything, so leave out case talk, threats and plans. A missing return address can send the card back unread.

4. How do I add money to an inmate's account?

Three deposit routes exist, per the sheriff: mailing a money order, feeding the bonding-area ATM with cash or a card, or depositing online through the steps on our deposits page. Each deposit tops out at $100.

Write money orders to Coweta County Detention Center, and put the inmate's name and ID number on the memo line along with your own name, address and signature. Postal money orders are credited right away, while other brands sit for ten days or more. Cash and personal checks should never go in the mail. Sunday at 11 p.m. is the cutoff for that week's store order.

5. How do phone calls work?

Calls flow outward only; nobody can phone an inmate. Barring discipline, inmates dial out daily between roughly 8 a.m. and 10:30 p.m., hours supervisors may adjust. Account setup lives on our phone page.

Whoever accepts the call pays a fee, and the Georgia Public Service Commission regulates rates. Unwanted calls can be blocked through the phone provider or by phoning the jail at 770-253-1664 during weekday business hours. Every call is recorded, and prosecutors may listen, so keep the case off the line. Families splitting the cost often agree on one person to fund the account, which keeps balances easy to track when money runs low near the end of the week.

6. Who runs the jail and where is it?

Coweta's Sheriff's Office Jail Division operates the lockup at 560 Greison Trail, Newnan, GA 30263 without a break, every day of the year. Detention officers cover security and safety on alternating 12-hour shifts, with one crew always on post.

Dial 770-253-1664 for the jail, or 770-253-1502 for the sheriff's main office. The Coweta County Prison, 101 Selt Road, is a separate place holding state-sentenced offenders, so a fresh arrest calls for the jail number. Booking, bonding and the deposit ATM share the Greison Trail building.

7. What if an inmate needs medical care?

According to the sheriff, each inmate gets medical care that meets professional medical and legal standards. HIPAA, the federal privacy law, keeps staff from discussing anyone's health with outsiders, close relatives included.

Relatives can still pass along key facts by phoning 770-253-1664: describe the condition and list the medications, knowing no report will come back. Account money can cover medical charges. Defense counsel may bring untreated conditions to the judge's attention. The jail refuses outside medication along with every other outside item. True emergencies remain a 911 matter.

8. Can inmate money be released to family?

Rarely, and only by the rules. Cash someone carried at booking can go to a friend or relative when the inmate signs a release form during booking and the money is collected within roughly 12 hours. If not, it lands on the inmate's account.

Account money can then go only to an approved bonding company posting the bond or to a holder of financial power of attorney, paid as a check in the inmate's name. The whole balance leaves at once, and only once per stay. Staff process these releases on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays during daytime hours.

9. Can someone be released without paying money?

Sometimes. A judge may allow recognizance release, though 17-6-12 forbids unsecured release for crimes like bail jumping and some repeat DUI charges.

Custody can also end through dismissal, time-served pleas or a granted bond motion. Defendants without money for counsel get Coweta Circuit's public defender, 770-254-2704, by asking at their first hearing. Magistrate Court, 770-254-2610, keeps the bond hearing schedule, and our bail page covers each bond type. Any warrant from another jurisdiction has to be resolved before the person walks out. Ask counsel whether reporting, a curfew or a no-contact order could stand in for cash, and file every release paper for future hearings.

10. What should families know about immigration holds?

Two days after booking is the window 42-4-14 gives staff for a good-faith attempt to learn each detainee's citizenship, and a supervisor contacts federal immigration officers if lawful status goes unproven. Each quarter the sheriff sends the state a tally of those cases.

ICE's I-247A form, backed by 8 CFR 287.7(d), seeks up to 48 extra hours of jail time, with Saturday, Sunday and holiday hours left off the clock. The ICE online detainee finder shows where a transferred relative went. ICE's Atlanta field office sits at 180 Ted Turner Drive SW, Suite 522, Atlanta, GA 30303, 404-893-1290. Bring in an immigration attorney early.

11. When does an inmate move to state prison?

Following a felony prison sentence, people generally wait on Greison Trail until Corrections can offer a diagnostic bed. Corrections, not the sheriff, decides when.

Once the move happens, the GDC offender lookup lists the new prison, and visiting there is covered in our Georgia state prisons guide. Inmate concerns go to Corrections at 404-656-4661. Corrections controls classification and which prison receives the person, so families rarely get advance notice of moving day. Ask the jail how long it holds belongings after a transfer, what happens to leftover account money and which ID a relative must show to collect either.

12. Where are juveniles held?

A youth ordered detained goes to the Martha K. Glaze Regional Youth Detention Center, 11850 Hastings Bridge Road, Hampton, GA 30228, phone 770-473-2100, fax 770-473-2101. Juvenile Justice names Coweta among the counties it serves.

Hampton's center writes separate visiting and mail policies; phone ahead before driving there. Youth records stay separate from adult jail files. Juvenile Court, 78 Greenville Street, Newnan, GA 30263, 770-254-3730, rules on detention and release. Parents can help most by bringing report cards and health records to the detention hearing.

13. Where are federal prisoners held?

Some people facing federal charges spend the pretrial months in a county jail under a Marshals agreement. Coweta's federal cases are heard in the Newnan Division of the Northern District, inside the Federal Building near the downtown post office.

Moves happen without warning. Following sentencing, the BOP prisoner lookup shows each federal prisoner's location. Written requests to the Marshals are the only route to federal booking records, and jail staff cannot decide anything about federal custody. Relatives get the most reliable news from defense counsel, and PACER carries the docket. Money placed on a county jail account for a federal detainee follows that jail's rules, so ask Greison Trail staff what happens to the balance if the Marshals move the person.

14. Can I see mugshots online?

Under 35-1-19, Georgia sheriffs and police keep booking photos off their own websites, yet an open records request to the sheriff's office at 560 Greison Trail, Newnan, GA 30263, 770-253-1502, may still yield one.

Expect to sign a pledge keeping the photo away from pay-for-removal websites. An acquittal or dismissal triggers 10-1-393.5, which forces those sites to take the photo down free of charge within 30 days. For immigration files, use the ICE FOIA request page, and federal booking photos require writing to the Marshals.

15. Which inmate services can families use from home?

From home, Coweta families mainly juggle five things for someone on Greison Trail: video sessions, postcards, deposits, phone accounts and the weekly store. Fuller answers for the first four sit higher on this page.

Booking a session and the clothing rules appear in the visits answer and on our visitation page. Postcard rules fill the mail answer. Money orders, the bonding-lobby ATM and online deposits make up the deposits answer, with calling covered in the phone answer. Snacks and hygiene goods come from Coweta commissary ordering, charged to the same account by Sunday at 11 p.m. Rules shift from time to time, so before sending anything, phone 770-253-1664 to confirm today's rules.

16. Which law enforcement agencies serve the county?

Whoever made the arrest, the booking happens on Greison Trail, and the officer usually came from one of these offices. Dial 911 in an emergency; Coweta's 911 center also handles routine calls at 770-254-3911.

  • Coweta County Sheriff's Office, whose Jail Division staffs Greison Trail day and night: 560 Greison Trail, Newnan, GA 30263; office 770-253-1502; jail 770-253-1664.
  • Newnan Police Department, 1 Joseph-Hannah Boulevard, Newnan, GA 30263; 770-254-2355.
  • Senoia Police Department, 505 Howard Road, Senoia, GA 30276; 770-599-3256.
  • Grantville Police Department, 123 LaGrange Street, Grantville, GA 30220; 770-583-2266, answered 24 hours.
  • Georgia State Patrol Post 24, covering Coweta, Fayette and Heard: 517 Turkey Creek Road, Newnan, GA 30263; 770-254-7201.
  • Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Atlanta field office: 180 Ted Turner Drive SW, Suite 522, Atlanta, GA 30303; 404-893-1290.

Moreland, Turin, Haralson and Sharpsburg residents reach help through that same 911 center, which sends deputies or whichever agency fits. Incident reports come from the agency that wrote them, never from the jail.
