Dade is a small county in the far northwest corner of Georgia. Sheriff runs the jail from 75 Case Avenue in Trenton.

A judge does. Magistrate judges at the Dade County Magistrate Court handle first hearings for felony warrants, 255 West Crabtree Street, Trenton. Other magistrates also serve. The court's number is 706-657-4113.

Deputies at the jail carry out the order. They cannot lower it on their own, so ask them what the order says and who signed it.

There is no single price list for the county that you can count on. A judge looks at the charge, the person's record, ties to the area, and the risk of running. The amount is on the booking record, so check Dade County Inmate Search and call 706-657-2277 if it is blank.

Georgia law says a person charged with a misdemeanor may not be refused bail, and no court may set excessive bail (O.C.G.A. 17-6-1). Some serious charges have extra rules, covered below.

Not always. Georgia allows a cash deposit with the court or sheriff (O.C.G.A. 17-6-4), a bond through a professional bondsman, or property the sheriff approves. Georgia caps what a surety may charge at 15 percent of the bond's face amount, though the bondsman may charge at least $50 for each bonded charge even when that is more than 15 percent (O.C.G.A. 17-6-30). On a $2,000 bond, for example, the most the fee could be is $300. Ask for the fee and every term in writing, and do not sign anything you do not understand.

Georgia law lets a person use property that the sheriff approves in the county where the offense took place. Dade County sets its own paperwork, so call the sheriff's office at 706-657-3233 and ask what proof of ownership, tax value, and loan balance they want.

Expect it to take longer than paying cash or using a bondsman. Every owner on the deed will likely need to be present or sign.

A no-bond line often means a judge has not yet set an amount. It can also mean a hold from another agency, a probation or parole issue, or a charge that a magistrate may not handle. Under O.C.G.A. 17-6-1, charges such as murder, rape, armed robbery, and aggravated child molestation can be bailed only by a superior court judge.

Georgia lists dozens of offenses, including DUI, burglary, aggravated assault, and some drug and family-violence charges, as bail restricted (O.C.G.A. 17-6-12). A person charged with one cannot be released on a promise alone. The release has to be secured by a cash deposit, a professional bondsman, or property the sheriff approves.

A cash deposit is returned after the case ends or the court releases the bond, minus fines, fees, or costs the judge orders. Georgia law (O.C.G.A. 17-6-4) lets the county keep cash that no one claims within two years. The law on bondsman fees (O.C.G.A. 17-6-30) says nothing about giving them back, so read your contract.
