Gordon County bail and bond: the Calhoun jail and how bonds are posted

Adults arrested in Gordon County are held at the Gordon County Jail, 2700 US Highway 41 NW, Calhoun, a jail run by the Gordon County Sheriff's Office. Use Gordon County Inmate Search to see if the person is in custody and what the bond is. To post bail, read the cash, property, and bonding company rules below, then call the jail at 706-629-1244 with questions. Georgia law fixes what a bonding company may charge.

Hearing dates and which Gordon County court has the case are explained on our court page, and statewide rules on our Georgia bail laws guide. This Gordon County bail guide also answers questions on arrests of young people, federal and immigration holds, police numbers, free lawyers and scams. Families in Gordon County can pay in cash, use a bonding company or, when the judge allows it, pledge property.

Ask whether each Gordon County charge carries its own bond, since the total can be more than one amount. If the person misses a Gordon County court date, a warrant can issue and the bond money can be lost. Only a judge sets the amount, so the staff at the Gordon County Jail can tell you the order but cannot change it.

The jail's website says anyone may post a cash bond. Bring U.S. currency for the exact full amount, because the jail cannot make change. A separate $20 cash bond fee is due in exact change for each person bonded out. The jail does not take cash bonds for City of Calhoun cases. Those are paid at the City of Calhoun Municipal Court, 100 Piedmont Street, 706-602-5790.

Everyone booked is brought before a judicial officer. The jail's website says first appearance hearings generally happen Monday through Friday around 2:00 PM, and on weekends or at times the Magistrate Judge sets. State law (O.C.G.A. 17-4-26) allows up to 72 hours after an arrest on a warrant.

5. How do I learn the bond amount?

A judge sets it at first appearance, and it shows on Gordon County Inmate Search once she is booked. Misdemeanor bail cannot be denied or set at an excessive level under O.C.G.A. 17-6-1. If the amount line is empty, call 706-629-1244 and ask whether her hearing has happened.

6. Can a friend or my church post the cash?

Georgia caps cash bonds from any person, group, or charity at three per year in a jurisdiction. A natural person posting for an immediate family member is exempt, under the version of O.C.G.A. 17-6-15 that took effect July 1, 2026. Anyone else should count how many they have posted.

7. Which bonding companies can write a bond here?

8. What may a bondsman collect under Georgia law?

O.C.G.A. 17-6-30 limits a surety's take to 15 percent of the bond's face amount. Per bonded charge, though, a company may ask for at least $50, even if 15 percent comes to less. The statute has no refund rule, so read the contract before you sign and ask what happens to the fee.

9. Can I pledge a home or land?

Yes, in two ways. A property bond uses land in Gordon County whose assessed value is at least the bond amount. Staff check ownership, value, and taxes through Tax Office records, and every listed owner must be present to sign. The same land cannot secure more than one bond at a time, and the jailed person's own property cannot secure his or her bond. A transfer bond uses land in another Georgia county. It is signed at that county's Sheriff's Office and sent to the Gordon County Jail in a sealed envelope. The $20 fee applies to both. For bail restricted charges, O.C.G.A. 17-6-12 calls for property the sheriff approves.

10. Why does it say she cannot get bail?

Murder, rape, armed robbery, and certain drug trafficking charges may be bailed only by a superior court judge (O.C.G.A. 17-6-1). A parole or probation hold, or a warrant from another county, can also keep her in. Ask at 706-629-1244 which applies.

↑ Back to the question list

11. What are bail restricted offenses?

They are the crimes listed in O.C.G.A. 17-6-12, a long list that includes violent offenses, burglary, and drug crimes. A person charged with one gets no release on a signature and must use a secured bond.

19. What if the charge is federal?

A federal charge goes to the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Georgia, not to a county court. Gordon County cases are heard in the Rome Division, Harold L.
