1. Is my family member sitting in the Alamo jail tonight?

Look the person up on Wheeler County Inmate Search first. It shows who is booked and what bond, if any, has been set. A person arrested a few minutes ago may not appear yet, so check again after an hour or two.

If the name still is not there, call the jail at 912-568-7151. A listing says that line answers all day and night. Give the full name and birth date, and ask which agency made the arrest.

2. Which address do I drive to, and why do two lists disagree?

Two official lists give two places. The Georgia Sheriffs' Association puts the Sheriff's Office at 21 West Forest Avenue, Alamo, GA 30411. The Georgia Department of Corrections lists the Wheeler County Jail at 100 Lakeview Drive, Alamo, GA 30411, phone 912-567-7127. That is a separate entry from the state prison in town.

Treat the Lakeview Drive address as the jail and the Forest Avenue address as the sheriff's desk, but confirm by phone. The Association shows 912-568-7107 on its web list and 912-568-7151 on its contact sheet, so either number should reach the sheriff's staff. Ask which door to use before you drive.

3. Who runs the jail, and who can I talk to there?

The elected sheriff runs the jail. Deputies at the desk can read you the charges, the bond line, and any holds on the record. They cannot change a bond or give legal advice.

Ask for each charge by name. A person with two charges can have two separate bond amounts.

4. Who sets the bond in Wheeler County?

The judge sets it; the sheriff does not. Georgia law lets the court that holds first appearance set bond for most charges, and the superior court judge alone can do it for the most serious ones.

The Clerk of Superior Court, 912-568-7137, keeps the court file. Staff there can tell you which court has the case and what the next date is.

5. How long before a Wheeler County judge sees him?

Someone taken in on a warrant must, under O.C.G.A. 17-4-26, be put in front of a judicial officer inside 72 hours. Bond is usually looked at then.

A weekend arrest can push the hearing to Monday. Call the jail at 912-568-7151 to ask when this person is on the list.

6. What does the bondsman cap mean for my wallet?

A licensed bonding company in Georgia cannot keep more than 15 percent of the bond as its fee. There is one floor: it may charge at least $50 for each charge it bonds, even if 15 percent comes to less. This is O.C.G.A. 17-6-30(a).

Example: on a $1,000 bond, the fee can be no higher than $150. On a $100 bond, it can be $50. Ask the jail whether it keeps a list of licensed companies, and get the contract in writing.

7. Where do I pay a cash bond, and what does it take?

Listings say a bond can be paid at a window inside the jail or at the Clerk of Superior Court, 16 West Pearl Street, Suite 101. Hours listed for the clerk are Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Carry photo identification and the precise bond total. Cash, a cashier's check, and a money order are the usual forms listed, and cards may carry a fee. Confirm at 912-568-7151 before you go, and ask about nights and weekends.

9. Does Wheeler County post a list of bond amounts?

The county and court pages checked for this guide do not show a bond schedule, so no sample dollar amounts are given. A judge sets the figure after reading the charge and the person's record.

The Sheriff's Office can read you the bond for a booked person at 912-568-7107. Ask whether it came from a judge or from a standing list.

10. Can land or a house stand in for the money?

Ask what deeds and tax papers to bring, how much equity is required, and whether land outside Wheeler County counts. Those rules are the sheriff's to explain, so do not guess.

11. Does a blank or "no bond" line mean he stays in?

Not always. Georgia code section 17-6-1 names serious crimes, such as murder, rape, and armed robbery, that only a superior court judge may bail. Another list in 17-6-12 bars release on a plain promise for many charges, including DUI, burglary, and drug counts. Those people can still be released on a secured bond.

A probation hold, a warrant from another county, or a new arrest while on bond can also keep someone in. Ask the jail desk to read every hold aloud.

12. What if Alamo or another town's police made the arrest?

Alamo is the county seat, and smaller towns also have officers. Ask the arresting officer or department for a report number and the place the person was taken.

Whether a town keeps its own holding cell is not confirmed, so check Wheeler County Inmate Search and then call the jail at 912-568-7151.

16. Do I get my money back, and how do I dodge a bond scam?

Ask the clerk when and how a cash bond is returned, and ask any bonding company in writing whether part of its fee can come back. Keep every receipt.
