Wilkes County Jail Inmate Bail & Bonds
Wilkes County bail and bond: Andrew Drive, the courthouse, and getting someone home
The Wilkes County Jail at 225 Andrew Drive in Washington holds adults arrested here. Sheriff runs it. Look the person up on Wilkes County Inmate Search to see whether they are booked and whether a bond is on the record. The Sheriff's Office line is 706-678-2224, and it is also the number for the jail.
Hearing dates and which Wilkes County court has the case are explained on our court page, and statewide rules on our Georgia bail laws guide. This Wilkes County bail guide also answers questions on putting money on an account, federal and immigration holds, police numbers, property bonds and free lawyers. Ask whether each Wilkes County charge carries its own bond, since the total can be more than one amount.
If the person misses a Wilkes County court date, a warrant can issue and the bond money can be lost. Only a judge sets the amount, so the staff at the Wilkes County Jail can tell you the order but cannot change it.
1. Is he booked into the Washington jail yet?
Search his name on Wilkes County Inmate Search. The search lists current bookings and may show a bond amount. Allow some hours for a new arrest to appear.
Still nothing? Call 706-678-2224. A listing says staff answer all day and night. Ask the deputy to read you the booking date and each charge.
↑ Back to the question list2. What is the street address for the jail?
The county sheriff page lists 225 Andrew Drive, Washington, GA 30673. A listing calls the building the Cecil A. Moore Law Enforcement Center and describes an 80-bed jail.
The sheriff's page also shows 23 Court Street, which is the courthouse where the courts sit. Do not mix up the two addresses. Some outside lists spell the street "Alexander Drive"; the county's own page says Andrew.
↑ Back to the question list3. Who answers for the jail?
Both use the same phone, 706-678-2224.
Call that line for your relative's charges, bond status, and any holds. Sheriff's staff do not set bond and cannot advise you what to plead.
↑ Back to the question list4. Which Wilkes County court handles the early bond questions?
The Magistrate Court is at 23 Court Street, Room 427, Washington, GA 30673, phone 706-678-1881, open Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The county's court page covers arrest warrants and civil claims, but it does not describe bond hearings. The Clerk of Superior Court's criminal side, at the same courthouse, keeps the criminal files and builds the arraignment and trial calendars. Ask either office how first appearance works for your relative.
↑ Back to the question list5. What is the clock on a first appearance?
O.C.G.A. 17-4-26 gives the court 72 hours after a warrant arrest to hold a first appearance.
A holiday weekend can make waiting feel longer, but the legal limit still runs. Call 706-678-1881 and ask when your relative is on the calendar.
↑ Back to the question list6. Is there a ceiling on what a bondsman can bill?
Yes, two guardrails come from O.C.G.A. 17-6-30(a). First, the fee may not go over 15 percent of the bond's face amount. Second, the company may charge a floor of $50 on every bonded charge.
On a $5,000 bond, the highest fee is $750. A $150 bond may cost $50 anyway. If there are three charges, the floor can apply three times.
↑ Back to the question list7. Where do I take the money, and what is accepted?
A listing says bonds are paid at a bonding window or with the clerk of court, in cash, a cashier's check, or a money order. No hours for any window appeared on a county page.
Phone 706-678-2224 before you leave. The Clerk of Superior Court is at 23 Court Street, Room 301, phone 706-678-2423, open Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
↑ Back to the question list8. Can I use a debit card or a payment kiosk?
A listing says some jails take cards through a lobby kiosk, but it does not say Wilkes County does. Do not count on it.
Ask at 706-678-2224. Deposits to an inmate account for phone and store items are separate from bail and do not release anyone.
↑ Back to the question list9. Does the county list standard bond amounts?
None appeared on the sheriff, magistrate, or clerk pages read for this guide, so no sample figures are given here. A judge sets the amount for each charge.
The jail can tell you what is on the record. Ask whether the figure came from a judge.
↑ Back to the question list10. Can property in Wilkes County count as security?
State law, O.C.G.A. 17-6-12, allows property to stand as security when the sheriff of the county where the offense occurred approves. In this county, call the sheriff at 706-678-2224 to begin.
Ask for the paperwork list, the equity required, and whether land outside the county is accepted. The answers are the sheriff's to give.
↑ Back to the question list11. He is listed with no bond. What does that mean?
Georgia law (O.C.G.A. 17-6-1) reserves bail for a superior court judge in cases of murder, rape, armed robbery, and other grave offenses. Under 17-6-12, a long list of charges, including DUI, burglary, and drug possession, may not be released on a signature alone.
Other causes include a probation hold or a warrant from another county. Ask the deputy to read each hold.
↑ Back to the question list12. What about arrests by the Washington Police Department?
The county's own pages do not describe a city lockup. Get the report number from the officer who arrested your relative and ask where the person was taken.
Then look at Wilkes County Inmate Search and call 706-678-2224 if the name does not show after several hours.
↑ Back to the question list13. Who defends people who cannot hire a lawyer?
Wilkes County is served by the Toombs Circuit public defender, 306 Greenway Street, Thomson, GA 30824. The phone is 706-595-7650, and the office is open weekdays, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. No separate Washington office is listed.
Ask the judge to appoint counsel at the first appearance.
↑ Back to the question list14. My daughter is 16. Where is she taken?
The Department of Juvenile Justice assigns Wilkes County to the Wilkes Regional Youth Detention Center, 1430 Industrial Park Road, Washington, GA 30673, right in the county seat. Their main line is 404-508-6500.
State law keeps a minor's file out of public view, so the adult search will not list her. Call the clerk at 706-678-2423 to ask which court has the case.
↑ Back to the question list15. What if the bond was posted and he misses court?
The judge may issue a warrant and declare the bond forfeited. A bonding company can then look to whoever signed.
Call the court office and the company right away, and talk with a lawyer.
↑ Back to the question list16. How do I know a bond-related call is real?
No court or jail will ask for gift cards, crypto, or an app transfer. Ask the clerk how a cash bond is returned, and ask any bondsman in writing about the fee.
If someone pressures you, hang up and call 706-678-2224 or the clerk at 706-678-2423 yourself.
↑ Back to the question list17. What happens with a federal arrest?
Federal cases from Wilkes County belong to the Southern District of Georgia, Augusta Division. The courthouse is 600 James Brown Blvd., Augusta, GA 30901, and the clerk answers at 706-849-4400. A federal magistrate judge holds the first hearing and sets any release terms. The U.S. Marshals Service keeps custody before trial, so the person may sit in a local jail that rents beds to the Marshals. After sentencing, use the Federal Bureau of Prisons inmate locator.
