When alternatives to detention and diversion programs through the probation department are unsuccessful, the young offenders throughout Champaign County will find themselves housed at the Champaign County Juvenile Detention Center. It is a secure building that houses juvenile offenders who are charged with crimes and are waiting for their court trials and sentencing, or they are serving a sentence that was given to them by the court. Programming is provided, and often mandatory, to encourage the youths to grow their life skills, social skills, prevent or treat substance abuse and addiction, educational needs are met in cooperation with the local schools, including physical education, and they are provided with healthy meals and snacks, time for exercise, and group discussions or meetings. Each is provided with all their basic needs, both physical and mental, and support for emotional needs as well. It remains in compliance with all regulations and requirements and has a focus on both safety and security for the staff as well as the students, and any visitors.
