How to Find Someone in Cook County Jail

If you think a friend or family member was arrested in Chicago or Cook County, there are several ways to check whether they are at Cook County Jail and where they are being held. Most are free and take only a few minutes.

Ways to look someone up

1. Search online (fastest)

Use the Sheriff's Individual in Custody Locator: iic.ccsheriff.org

  • Search by first and last name, or by booking number. Type the booking number with no dash.
  • Results show the person's booking number and housing location. The first part of the location is the division (building), such as "DIV10". The rest is the tier or unit.
  • Write down the booking number. You'll need it for mail, money, visits and phone accounts.

2. Call the jail's automated line

Call (773) 674-5245 to check whether someone is in custody and where they are held.

3. Talk to a person

4. Get alerts with VINE

Illinois VINE is a free service that tracks custody status in jails across the state. You can search, or sign up to be told by text, email or phone call when someone is released or moved.

5. Check court case information

The Clerk of the Circuit Court of Cook County keeps the court files. Criminal case files are viewed in person at the clerk's office in the courthouse where the case is heard. For most Chicago felonies, that's the Leighton Criminal Court Building at 26th Street and California Avenue, next to the jail. The clerk's online case information page covers many other kinds of cases.

Can't find them? Here's why that can happen

  • They haven't been booked yet. After an arrest, people are often held at a police station first and see a judge before going to the jail. This can take a day or more. Try again later, or call the police department that made the arrest.
  • Their name is spelled differently. Try other spellings, a middle name, or only the last name.
  • They were released. Since Illinois ended cash bail in 2023, many people are released after their first court hearing.
  • They were sent to state prison. After sentencing, people may move to the Illinois Department of Corrections. Search at idoc.illinois.gov.
  • They are in federal custody. People charged with federal crimes are not held at Cook County Jail. Use the Federal Bureau of Prisons locator at bop.gov/inmateloc.
  • They are under 18. Youths are usually held at the Cook County Juvenile Temporary Detention Center, not the adult jail, and their records are not public.
