Only one block north of the courthouse, the Montgomery County Sheriff Office and the 42-bed Montgomery County Jail are found in the same building allowing for all offenders to be booked directly after being arrested and then held at the same location as they wait for their trial or serve a short sentence. Inmates of the county are arrested on either misdemeanor or felony charges and will be housed and sentenced accordingly.

Upon intake, the booking process is completed, which includes a medical screening, fingerprinting and mugshots, DNA sample, along with an assessment to determine security needs, medical needs, mental health requirements, and housing assignment.

Staff is available to transport all inmates to court dates and any medical appointments or emergency needs, as well as inspecting all mail for contraband, receiving commissary funds and other money for inmates, maintaining the safety of the community and the security of the facility, and other tasks.

The Montgomery County Jail also provides several other services to inmates including basic needs in meals, laundry, and hygiene items, and programs including AA, counseling, religious programs, education, recreation, and opportunities to grow social and life skills.

Any questions or concerns about one of the inmates should be directed to the staff directly at 217-532-9511, including those regarding bail, how to pay bail, and visitation.

While meals, medical care, and mental health support are all provided, it is also important for offenders to have contact with their friends and family during the length of their incarceration. To accommodate this, mail is delivered on weekdays from the Postal Service.

Each letter must have the correct address of:

Inmate's Full Name & Inmate ID#
Montgomery County Jail
140 N Main St.
Hillsboro, IL. 62049

... and a full return address including the name of the person who sent it. Nothing else may be on the envelope, and each will be checked for contraband before the inmate receives it.

The phones that are maintained in the housing units are able to make outgoing calls only and not accept incoming calls, and all calls are made collect or can be prepaid online.

Visiting hours are Tuesdays from 1:30pm until 3:30pm and online registration allows for additional funds to be added for remote visits.

What is the booking process for the Montgomery County Jail?

After being arrested, the offender is brought to the Montgomery County Jail for booking, which is the detailed process of identifying, classifying, deciding on charges, and whether the person will either be released on their own recognizance, allowed to be released on bail, or moved into the jail until their court date.

The first thing every newly arrested person must do is close their mouth. Everything an offender says may be used against them, so the best thing to do is remain silent when questioned about the arrest and what led to it.

These are the steps of booking someone into the Montgomery County Jail:

  • Personal identification.
  • Mugshot(s).
  • Questions about medical history, mental health, drug and alcohol use, and gang affiliations.
  • Possible DNA.
  • Full body search.
  • Property forfeiture.
  • Free phone call.

If you have any questions about when you can pay an offender's bond and what the cost will be, call the facility at 217-532-9511.

How do you pay bail for someone who has been arrested in Montgomery County?

When an offender is arrested and brought to the Montgomery County Jail in Hillsboro for booking, there are several outcomes after being processed.

1. The offender will be released with no bail, promising to return on a specific date to appear before a judge in either Municipal or Montgomery County Court.
2. The offender is ordered to remain in jail until their court date.
3. The offender is allowed to be released after paying a specified bond or bail.  Call 217-532-9511 to get the exact amount.

The payment of an offender's bail or bond can take many shapes.

  • A cash bond is paid in full at the jail's bonding window or the clerk of court, usually by cash, cashier's check or money order, and many jails also take debit or credit cards through a lobby kiosk or an online bond vendor for an added fee; bring the inmate's full name and booking number, and the jail's number is 217-532-9511.
  • It can be paid using a bail company, licensed to do business in Montgomery County.
  • Many courts accept land or a home as bond collateral; the owner shows clear title and equity of at least the bond amount, often double, using a deed and a recent tax or appraisal value, and the court that set bail approves the property.

How Do You Deposit Money for an Inmate in the Montgomery County Jail?

There are FOUR options for putting money on an inmate's books:

Option 1 - Dropping Money at the Jail
Bring money to the jail in person.
Either the jail personnel will process the Inmate Account payment or you will use a Jail ATM self-serve kiosk in the lobbies that accepts cash, debit or credit cards.

Option 2 - Deposit Inmate Money Online
Montgomery County Jail uses Jail ATM to process all online deposits to an inmate's account. The company charges you a small fee for doing so, but the fee probably isn't as much as gas and parking would cost to take it to the jail in person.

Option 3 - Mail the Inmate Deposit to the Jail
Mailing a deposit takes more time to process than the other methods but can be done if you live too far away to bring it in person and you don't have a debit/credit card for online deposits. Never send cash. Always send a Money Order from the US Post Office, a reputable bank or Western Union. Call the Montgomery County Jail first as they may want you to do this online or at the jail kiosk instead.
Make the Money Order out to the payee the jail names (check with the jail first) and put their Inmate ID# in memo section of the Money Order. Never mail cash or a personal check.
