Marion County Inmate Search

To find someone held in Marion County, start with the jail inmate search. The Marion County Adult Detention Center at 695 Justice Way (317-327-1700) holds most adults arrested in Indianapolis. This guide also covers VINELink, other jails and what to do if the person was moved. Our court guide explains what comes next.

1. How do I look up someone in the Indianapolis jail?

  1. Open the jail inmate search. You can search by name and birth date, booking number, or FBI or ICE number.
  2. Check the booking date, charges, bond and next court date.
  3. If the name isn't there, try VINELink, which also sends free release alerts.
  4. Still nothing? Call the Marion County Adult Detention Center at 317-327-1700.

New arrests can take several hours to show up while booking is finished.

5. Are mugshots public?

Indiana's public records law (IC 5-14-3) lets the Sheriff's Office decide whether to release a booking photo. You can send a written records request to the Marion County Sheriff's Office. If you are denied, you can complain to the Public Access Counselor. An expungement under IC 35-38-9 can seal arrest records, but private mugshot sites may not remove photos on their own.

6. Is the person at the Adult Detention Center held on a warrant?

Many bookings at the Adult Detention Center involve warrants for missed court dates or probation violations. A lawyer may bring the warrant before the judge, and family members can help by gathering paperwork such as proof of employment. Staff from the sheriff's office run the facility and can explain a hold at 317-327-1700. Records are held by the clerk at 675 Justice Way, Indianapolis, IN 46203, at 317-327-4740. Statewide, read the public case, the warrant order and any bond on MyCase.

7. How do I find a federal prisoner in Indianapolis?

People charged in federal court may be held by the U.S. Marshals Service in local jails. Their cases are at the Southern District of Indiana courthouse, 46 E. Ohio Street (317-229-3700). Use the Federal Bureau of Prisons inmate locator after sentencing.

8. Held by ICE after an arrest?

ICE can send the jail a detainer (Form I-247A). Since July 1, 2026, Senate Enrolled Act 76 has required Indiana jails to comply and to notify the bail judge and the person. Once ICE takes custody, use the ICE Online Detainee Locator System; the A-number search is fastest, and a name plus birth country also works.
