Grant County Detention Center Inmate Search
Grant County Inmate Search
To find someone held after a Grant County arrest, search the inmate roster of the Grant County Detention Center (212 Barnes Road, Williamstown, KY 41097; 859-824-5191) and match the birth date; the office is open weekdays 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The local stance on booking photos is set out below. VINELink, KYeCourts guest search and our court guide cover alerts, court dates and hearings.
1. Where are Grant County inmates kept?
They are kept at the Grant County Detention Center on Barnes Road in Williamstown. The office line, 859-824-5191, is answered on weekdays. After a fresh arrest, the sheriff (859-824-3333) or the city police who made it can tell you if processing is finished. If the name isn't on the roster yet, booking may still be underway.
↑ Back to the question list2. Is the inmate list online?
Yes. Enter a last name in the inmate roster and compare the birth date to be sure you have the right person. VINELink sends release alerts, and KYeCourts guest search shows hearings. New bookings may take some time to appear.
↑ Back to the question list3. What are the visiting rules?
Schedules, sign-up, ID requirements and any video option are all set by the jail, so phone 859-824-5191 on a weekday. Anyone under 18 comes with a parent or guardian. Expect a screening at the entrance, and leave bags in the car. Visits can be called off during lockdowns. Our visitation guide explains more.
↑ Back to the question list4. What's the process to bond someone out?
First call 859-824-5191 to verify the bond figure and that the inmate has not already left custody. Then pay the circuit clerk at the judicial center (859-824-4467) in cash or with a certified or cashier's check; the jail doesn't take bond. Bring ID. See our bail guide and money guide.
↑ Back to the question list5. How do I send money?
Deposit methods, caps and charges are set by the jail; ask 859-824-5191. Put the money under the legal name on the booking. It covers commissary food, hygiene goods and calls once fees are subtracted. Our money guide and commissary guide cover the details.
↑ Back to the question list6. Can I call someone in the jail in Williamstown?
No. Incoming calls aren't put through, though inmates may dial out on a prepaid account. Every call is captured on tape and can become evidence, so never talk about the charges. Ask 859-824-5191 about setup and rates. See our phone guide and messaging guide.
↑ Back to the question list7. What's the right way to write to someone in the Barnes Road jail?
Phone 859-824-5191 on a weekday for the address and current rules. Print the whole legal name, plus your own address in the corner. Officers inspect each envelope other than legal mail, and anything banned is sent back. Our mail guide covers photos.
↑ Back to the question list8. Who do I call with a medical concern?
Phone 859-824-5191 and ask for a supervisor; explain what's wrong, perhaps a skipped prescription, and who the inmate is. Property questions are handled there as well. A Boone County Trial Office of the Department of Public Advocacy (6159 First Financial Dr., Suite 300, Burlington, KY 41005; 833-385-6050) attorney may bring health problems before the court. A doctor's name and medicine list help staff check quickly.
↑ Back to the question list9. Is there a way to know if a Williamstown inmate has other warrants?
The county sits on I-75 between Boone, Kenton and Scott, so people held here sometimes have a case in one of those courts too. The sheriff's deputies will check local files at 859-824-3333. For everywhere else, the free Court of Justice guest search runs statewide; add a birth date for a cleaner list.
If a warrant is still standing when the person gets out, a defense attorney can arrange a return to the Grant County Detention Center with bond already discussed. The circuit clerk at 224 S. Main St., Williamstown, KY 41097, takes missed-court questions at 859-824-4467.
↑ Back to the question list10. Where are Grant juveniles taken?
Not to the adult jail. Each youth in detention is entitled to a hearing in under 48 hours, not counting weekends and holidays (KRS 610.265). The Department of Juvenile Justice (502-573-2738) picks the placement, and Grant District Court hears the case.
↑ Back to the question list11. Can I get a mugshot?
Grant mugshots fall under the open records law. Put a request in writing to the jail under the open records law, giving the name and arrest date and saying you want the mugshot. Journalists and news media outlets can direct a similar letter to the jail or to the sheriff's office. Immigration photos need the ICE FOIA page. Federal booking pictures stay private except when the Marshals put one out to catch a fugitive.
↑ Back to the question list12. Are federal prisoners housed on Barnes Road?
Possibly, through a Marshals contract. Federal charges from Grant County are heard at the U.S. District Court, Eastern District of Kentucky, 35 West Fifth Street, Covington, KY 41011, 859-392-7925, where custody before trial is argued at a detention hearing. Look in the BOP locator once a federal sentence begins. Williamstown families can call the Covington office of the U.S. Marshals, 859-392-7918.
↑ Back to the question list13. What does an ICE detainer mean for a Grant inmate?
Barnes Road staff (859-824-5191) can confirm an immigration detainer; ICE's Louisville office answers at 502-625-6202.
- ICE sends an I-247A detainer to the jail.
- Under 8 CFR 287.7(d), once the Grant case would release the person, Williamstown's jail may be asked by ICE to keep a Grant prisoner up to 48 hours after they would otherwise be released.
- ICE has to pick up the inmate before that time runs out.
- If not, the jail releases the person.
- The ICE locator shows people in ICE custody.
14. How long after bail is someone released?
Release follows the paperwork. Bail is paid at the judicial center, and the order goes to the jail. Belongings and any balance left on the account are returned, less fees. Ask 859-824-5191 what to expect and line up a driver.
↑ Back to the question list15. Where does a Grant inmate go after a state sentence?
A name search in the KOOL search returns the current prison, or the county jail holding state inmates. Our Kentucky prison directory has the phone numbers. The listing appears once Corrections finishes intake, so check back if it isn't there yet.
↑ Back to the question list16. What jail would hold someone arrested just over the county line?
Arrests in the bordering counties are not booked on Barnes Road. Boone County has the Boone County Detention Center in Burlington, 859-334-2143, and Kenton County the Kenton County Detention Center in Covington, 859-363-2400. Gallatin and Owen County arrests go to the Carroll County Detention Center in Carrollton, 502-732-9499. Harrison and Pendleton County arrests go to the Bourbon County Regional Detention Center in Paris, 859-987-2137. Scott County uses the Scott County Detention Center in Georgetown, 502-863-7880.
↑ Back to the question list17. Which police serve Grant County?
These Grant County offices each keep their own line.

- Calls for the Dry Ridge Police Department go through Dry Ridge City Hall at 859-824-3335.
