↑ Back to the question list

How is bond posted?

Phone the jail at 606-878-9431 or the circuit clerk at 606-330-2078 to learn where to pay at that time. Have the inmate's full name and the charge ready, and bring a photo ID. Our bail guide covers bond types, conditions and refunds.

↑ Back to the question list

How do I send money?

Use the lobby kiosk at the jail, or deposit online with the jail's banking service. That money covers commissary, and a separate prepaid phone account can be funded the same way. See our money guide and commissary guide.

↑ Back to the question list

How do phone calls work?

New arrivals get two free 5-minute calls during booking. After that, calls are paid from a PIN debit account or a prepaid account that family sets up. Inmates also send messages on jail tablets. See our phone guide and messaging guide.

↑ Back to the question list

Where should letters go?

Personal letters to the Laurel jail are scanned rather than handed over. Write the inmate's full name and jacket number on the envelope and address it to Laurel County Corrections KY, PO Box 247, Phoenix, MD 21131. Inmates read the scans on tablets. Do not mail cash, stamps, stickers or anything glued or perfumed, since it cannot be scanned. See our mail guide.

How can someone in jail get a lawyer?

The London Trial Office of the public defender (217 South Main Street, Suite 201, London, KY 40741; 833-205-0826) is appointed for those who qualify. Income is reviewed at arraignment. With the case number in hand, family members may call the defender's office to learn who has the file. See our court guide.

↑ Back to the question list

Can I search Laurel warrants online?

Laurel deputies can say whether a warrant is out; call the sheriff's office at 606-864-6600, or have an attorney schedule a walk-in. Walking in with counsel usually means a quicker bond decision, and the lawyer can ask the judge for release terms the same day.

↑ Back to the question list

Where do juveniles go?

Youths are never housed with adults. Kentucky law sets a detention hearing within 48 hours, leaving out weekends and holidays (KRS 610.265). The Department of Juvenile Justice (502-573-2738) assigns a facility and notifies the family. Juvenile records and hearings are closed to the public.

↑ Back to the question list

How can I get a Laurel mugshot?

Ask for a mugshot in writing under the Open Records Act, addressed to the jail at 440 Hammock Road, London, KY 40744. News media often request booking photos from the sheriff's office too. ICE photos require the ICE records request form. The U.S. Marshals keep federal mugshots private unless a fugitive is being sought.

↑ Back to the question list

What about federal prisoners?

The Marshals decide which federal prisoners are housed here. Federal arrests go to the U.S. District Court, Eastern District of Kentucky, 310 South Main Street, London, KY 40741, 606-877-7910 for a detention hearing before a magistrate judge. Use the federal prison locator once a sentence starts, since the Bureau of Prisons then chooses the prison. The U.S. Marshals keep an office in London itself; call 606-864-6993.

↑ Back to the question list

What happens with an ICE detainer?

Booking staff at the London correctional center (606-878-9431) know whether a detainer is attached; ICE's office in Louisville handles the case side at 502-625-6202.

  1. ICE files Form I-247A with the jail.
  2. When the Laurel case no longer requires custody, staff can hold the person up to 48 hours past release.
  3. If ICE does not pick the person up before the window closes, they go free.
  4. Track them with the ICE finder.
↑ Back to the question list

What happens on release?

↑ Back to the question list

How do I locate a state inmate?

Corrections assigns each state inmate after an intake review at a reception center. Some people with shorter Class D sentences stay at county jails such as Hammock Road. Use the KOOL lookup to search by name or number, or our prisons in Kentucky for contacts.

↑ Back to the question list

What if the arrest was in a county next door?

McCreary arrests come to Hammock Road, but the other neighbors keep their own jails. Corbin straddles the Knox and Whitley lines, so a Corbin arrest may go to the Whitley County Detention Center in Williamsburg, 606-549-6013, or the Knox County Detention Center in Barbourville, 606-546-6215. North and east are the Rockcastle County Detention Center in Mt. ↑ Back to the question list

Can the prosecutor tell me about the case?

Prosecutors share only the basics. The London office of the county attorney, 606-864-6159, can confirm a District Court date, and the 27th Circuit office, 606-330-2035, can do the same once a grand jury indicts.

How far ahead must a London video visit be booked?

Book at least six hours ahead, through the jail's video provider online or on the lobby kiosk; first create a profile and upload a copy of your ID. Sessions run 8 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. every day. Yes. Attorneys, clergy, media and medical staff may come at any time, and those meetings do not count against the two weekly personal sessions. Lawyer, clergy and medical meetings are not recorded.

↑ Back to the question list
