Lewis County Inmate Search

Lewis County arrestees are held at the Mason County Detention Center in Maysville (606-564-3621) or the Greenup County Detention Center in Greenup (606-473-9660). Check the inmate roster for each and match the birth date. Each jail sets its own mugshot release rules, described below. VINELink and KYeCourts guest portal provide alerts and court dates.

1. Which jail has a Lewis inmate?

Lewis sends prisoners to two neighboring counties: the Mason County Detention Center, 702 US 68, Maysville, KY 41056, 606-564-3621, and the Greenup County Detention Center, 100 Laurel St., Greenup, KY 41144, 606-473-9660. Families may need to call both. Soon after an arrest, the Lewis sheriff (606-796-2912) can say which jail received the person. Both host jails were above their bed counts on Oct. 22, 2026. Kentucky Corrections listed 135 people in Mason's 131 beds and 136 in Greenup's 98. Lewis County had an estimated 12,901 residents in 2025, the Census Bureau reports.

2. Is an online roster available?

Search the inmate roster by surname, then confirm the date of birth. Both host jails house people from several counties, so check that the record says Lewis. If nothing turns up, call 606-564-3621 or 606-473-9660. VINELink sends custody alerts and KYeCourts guest portal shows hearings.

3. How are visits scheduled?

Determine whether the person is in Maysville or Greenup, then ask that facility (606-564-3621 or 606-473-9660) about visiting hours, registration, ID and video choices. A parent or guardian has to accompany minors, and visitors pass through screening. Read our visitation guide.

4. Where do I post bond for a Lewis inmate?

Learn the amount from the jail holding the person, then pay at the Vanceburg Justice Center (606-796-3053) using cash, check, money order or card. Bring ID. Plenty of defendants are released without paying once the pretrial interview is done. See our bail guide and money guide.

↑ Back to the question list

5. How are funds deposited for a Lewis inmate?

Each host jail has its own deposit system, so ask 606-564-3621 or 606-473-9660 about methods, limits and fees. Use the booked name exactly. The account covers commissary and calls, and leftover money is returned at release. Our money guide and commissary guide explain more.

↑ Back to the question list

6. Can I receive calls from an inmate?

Yes, through a prepaid account opened with the jail where the person is held, which also sets the rates. Every conversation is taped and can end up as evidence, so leave the charges out of it. See our phone guide and messaging guide.

↑ Back to the question list

7. What should I know before writing?

Learn whether Maysville or Greenup has the person, then get that facility's address and rules. Write the full booked name and a return address. Everything except legal mail is opened and searched, and prohibited items are returned. Our mail guide covers photos.

8. How do I report a medical or property problem?

Call the host jail (606-564-3621 or 606-473-9660), request the shift supervisor and describe the concern, giving the inmate's name. The same staff can answer property questions. For serious issues, the Boyd County Trial Office of the Department of Public Advocacy (108 28th Street, Catlettsburg, KY 41129; 833-385-6052) can bring the matter to the judge for qualifying clients; see our court page.

↑ Back to the question list

9. Might an inmate in Greenup or Maysville have more than one warrant?

Yes. This county sends its arrests to the Greenup County Detention Center and the Mason County Detention Center, and a second warrant from Greenup, Mason or Fleming turns up now and then. The sheriff's deputies check local warrants at 606-796-2912. A name search on the courts' free guest case search covers every Kentucky county statewide, and Ohio's courts handle cases across the river.

A warrant still standing after release is handled by a planned surrender at whichever of those jails the sheriff directs, with counsel having asked about bond. The circuit clerk at 94 Second St., Vanceburg, KY 41179, answers at 606-796-3053.

10. Where do arrested juveniles go?

Minors aren't held alongside adults in Maysville or Greenup. A detained child gets a hearing within 48 hours, not counting weekends and holidays (KRS 610.265). The Department of Juvenile Justice (502-573-2738) arranges placement, and Lewis District Court hears the case.

↑ Back to the question list

11. Are Lewis mugshots public?

Yes. File a written records request to the booking jail listing the inmate's name and arrest date, and state plainly that the mugshot is what you want. Reporters at news media outlets can route these through the sheriff. ICE photos require the ICE FOIA page. The Marshals release federal mugshots only during fugitive searches.

↑ Back to the question list

12. Can federal prisoners be held in Maysville or Greenup?

Yes, if the Marshals have a bed contract. Federal cases from Lewis go to the U.S. District Court, Eastern District of Kentucky, 1405 Greenup Avenue, Ashland, KY 41101, 606-329-2465, and a magistrate there rules on pretrial jail at a detention hearing. Look up sentenced federal prisoners in the federal inmate locator. Vanceburg federal arrests fall to the U.S. Marshals in Ashland (606-329-2587).

13. What happens when ICE files a detainer?

Vanceburg has no jail, so a Lewis detainer is filed in Maysville (606-564-3621) or in Greenup (606-473-9660), depending on where the person was taken. ICE's Louisville office answers at 502-625-6202.

  1. ICE sends an I-247A detainer to the jail.
  2. When Lewis custody would end, ICE can ask the host facility to keep a Lewis prisoner up to 48 hours after they would otherwise be released, as 8 CFR 287.7(d) provides.
  3. Agents have to pick the inmate up before that window closes.
  4. If agents don't come, the jail releases the person.
  5. Follow transfers on the ICE detainee locator.
