Maine county jails and state prisons

Maine has 16 counties. The sheriff runs the jail where the county has one. Cumberland, York, Penobscot, and Kennebec run the larger buildings. Aroostook books at the jail in Houlton. Lincoln and Sagadahoc share Two Bridges Regional Jail in Wiscasset. In October 2026, Knox County was in talks to join that authority. Franklin, Oxford, Somerset, Hancock, Washington, Waldo, Androscoggin, and Piscataquis each keep a county jail. City police departments have holding rooms, not county jails.

County jails follow standards overseen with the counties, not a separate state prison board. Since 2019, jails have had to provide medication-assisted treatment. Counties spent more than $12.6 million on that treatment and on mental-health services across 15 correctional facilities in the year covered by a January 2025 report. A federal waiver approved in September 2026 will let jails and prisons bill MaineCare for some clinical care in the last 60 days before release. Billing is scheduled to start July 1, 2028.

Jails in Maine hold people before trial and people serving a county sentence. A misdemeanor, and some split sentences, stay in the county jail. A prison sentence goes to the Department of Corrections. Maine State Prison is in Warren. Maine Correctional Center is in Windham. Bolduc Correctional Facility is the minimum-security unit next to the prison in Warren. Downeast Correctional Facility is in Bucks Harbor. Mountain View Correctional Facility is in Charleston. Women are held at the women’s center in Windham. Maine has no Federal Bureau of Prisons institution.

How many county jails are there in Maine?

Sixteen counties, fewer than sixteen jails. Two Bridges covers Lincoln and Sagadahoc. Other counties run one jail. When a jail holds someone for another county, for the state, or for the U.S. Marshals, it bills a contract rate. A full jail in Washington or Piscataquis means a longer drive for the family, not a second building in the same town.

How many juvenile detention centers are there in Maine?

One. Long Creek Youth Development Center, at 675 Westbrook Street in South Portland, is the state’s only secure juvenile facility. The Department of Corrections runs it. A youth ordered into secure detention anywhere in Maine is taken there, including from Aroostook and Washington counties. Long Creek holds youth waiting on a hearing and youth who have been committed. It runs school on site. Visit scheduling at Long Creek was not part of the October 2026 pause that hit the adult prisons.

Search the county of the arrest. The adult listing is that county’s jail, or Two Bridges. The youth listing is Long Creek.

What the first days in a Maine county jail are like

Booking is a queue: identity, prints, a medical screen, a search, property bagged, one call. The person has not been convicted. The pod still runs on counts. In January the holding cell is cold. Food is plain, the uniform does not fit, and sleep is broken. Withdrawal from alcohol, opioids, or methamphetamine can start before the first appearance. Jails are required to screen for medication-assisted treatment.

Deputies who apply the rules the same way to everyone run a quieter floor. Uneven enforcement is how contraband moves. Cumberland and York can separate by risk. A small county jail often cannot.

Larger Maine jails sell tablet time, video visits, and deposits through a vendor. A small jail may still be a phone account and a visit through glass. Those privileges can be shut off. Each county page on this site lists the jail phone, the vendor, and the way to send money for that sheriff’s office.
