Cass County Jail Inmate Bail & Bonds
Cass County bail and bond: Walker, Grand Rapids, and where your person really is
A person arrested in Cass County is booked into the Cass County Detention Center in Walker, at 301 Minnesota Avenue W, Walker, MN 56484. Cass also rents beds at the Itasca County Jail in Grand Rapids, so your loved one could be there. Below you will find how bail works and how to pay it.
Type the name into the official Cass County jail search first. For charges, mugshots and fresh bookings together, open our Inmates in Custody page.
Now phone the jail desk at 218-547-2441. Ask which town holds your person and where bail money is taken. Questions about the judge and the first hearing are answered on the court page.
1. My brother was arrested near Walker. Is he in Walker or Grand Rapids?
Run his name through Cass County Inmate Search first. Cass County agreed in 2023 to rent 40 beds in the Itasca County Jail for three years starting in June 2024, after ending an older deal with Crow Wing County. So an inmate may be moved. Call 218-547-2441 and ask where he is sleeping, then ask whether visits and money are handled in Walker or in Grand Rapids.
2. Which Cass County number should I use first?
Use the jail desk, 218-547-2441, for custody and bail questions. The Sheriff's Office main line is 218-547-1424, and the toll-free line is 800-450-2677. The jail administrator, Lt. Chris Thompson, has a direct line at 218-547-7361. Records is open weekdays from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. For a late-night emergency, dial 911.
3. Can I post bail at the Walker Detention Center?
The county pages we read describe the jail's visiting and property rules but say nothing about a bail window, its hours, or accepted payment. Ask the jail desk at 218-547-2441 before leaving home, and ask whether payment for someone housed in Grand Rapids is taken at the Walker jail or in Itasca County. Get a receipt with the case number.
4. Is money left at Jail Central Control the same as bail?
No. Central Control at the Walker jail takes money for an inmate's account, which pays for store items. That money does not free anyone. Bail is a separate payment set by the court. Bondsmen are also barred by state law from putting money on an inmate's account, so be careful of anyone who offers that as part of a deal.
5. What will a Cass County judge likely do at the first hearing?
Under Rule 6.02, the starting point is release on a promise to appear or an unsecured bond. A judge can add limits when public safety or a return to court is at risk, such as travel limits, a no-contact order, or supervision, or can set money bail. State law caps the cash bail on many misdemeanors at twice the top fine, with higher multiples for some offenses. No set Cass County list of amounts was found.
6. How long can police hold him before a judge hears the case?
A person in custody must be brought before a judge without unnecessary delay and within 36 hours, not counting the day of arrest, Sundays, or holidays. Saturdays count. On a misdemeanor, he goes home on a citation if no judge has seen him by then. Cass County courts sit in Walker, so call the jail desk, 218-547-2441, for his hearing date.
7. What if he was arrested on or near Leech Lake land?
Part of the Leech Lake Reservation lies in Cass County, and officers from different agencies may make an arrest. The arresting agency decides where the person is first taken. Ask that agency for the report number, then use Cass County Inmate Search to see whether the booking reached the county jail. If it did not, ask the Sheriff's Office at 218-547-1424 which agency has him.
8. Can a bondsman post the bond for me in Cass County?
Yes, if the agent is licensed by the Minnesota Department of Commerce and approved by the State Court Administrator's Office. The agent's premium is the rate the surety company filed with the state, with a $100 minimum, so compare rates before you sign. An agent may not solicit at the jail or deposit money for an inmate. Keep copies of every document and any collateral receipt.
9. Can land near Walker count as security?
A judge may accept security other than cash, but the court decides case by case whether land or a cabin counts, and whether the property must be in this county. Ask the court administrator before you offer a deed. State law makes a bondsman write a numbered receipt for collateral and rules out a quitclaim deed.
10. Why does my sister's booking show no release?
A booking can look stuck because of a hold from a warrant, a probation violation, or a no-contact order. In Minnesota every person has a right to have bail set, so a blank often means the judge has not yet acted. Call 218-547-2441 and ask whether a hold or a pending first appearance is the cause.
11. Where is a Cass County teen held?
Cass County has used the Northwestern Minnesota Juvenile Center in Bemidji; its superintendent gave the county board a report in 2022. Juvenile cases are private and will not show up in the adult search. Ask the Sheriff's Office at 218-547-1424 to confirm where a particular young person is held today.
12. How do we get a public defender in Cass County?
Tell the judge at the first hearing that you cannot pay for a lawyer, or apply on the Online PD Application of the Minnesota courts. The court decides if you qualify and appoints the lawyer; you cannot pick. To reach the public defender's office, ask the jail desk at 218-547-2441 for the judge and date.
13. What if he skips a Walker court date?
The judge can forfeit the bond and order his arrest. If a bondsman is involved, the court must notify the surety within 30 days. Call his lawyer and the bondsman on the same day, because a judge may excuse the penalty in some cases.
14. When does bail cash return?
Money bail stays his property even if you paid it. The clerk keeps the money while the case is open. Then it goes to him, or to a person he names in writing, after any fine or restitution the judge orders. Ask the court administrator for the refund steps.
15. Is the call asking for money to release him a scam?
Treat any stranger who wants speed, a payment app, or gift cards as a scam. Hang up and phone the jail at 218-547-2441. Jail staff will tell you if a payment is needed and where it goes.
