Attala County Jail Inmate Bail & Bonds
Attala County bail and bond: the Kosciusko jail and its court sessions
Attala County's jail sits with the Sheriff's Office at 102 Ridgewood Circle, Kosciusko, MS 39090. The sheriff acts as the jailer, so arrests end up there. This page shows how bail is set, what it costs and where to take bond papers.
Use the official jail search and type the legal name. It can show a bond once staff add it. Our Inmates in Custody list is a second stop for charges, warrants and mugshots.
Call 662-289-5556 and ask for the booking time and the charge. Then open our court guide to see the hearings that follow.

The sheriff's office takes calls at 662-289-5556. Ask for the booking time, the charge, and whether a judge has already held the first hearing.
↑ Back to the question list2. How often do judges visit the jail?
Justice Court judges hold court at the jail three times a week, so a first hearing comes quickly after most arrests.
State Rule 5.1 sets a 48-hour limit after an arrest with no warrant. If your person has waited longer than that, call the Justice Court at 662-289-7272 and ask about it.
↑ Back to the question list3. Where is the Justice Court in Kosciusko?
It is at 254 Highway 12 West, Kosciusko, phone 662-289-7272. It handles traffic tickets, DUIs, county ordinance cases, and initial appearances in felonies.
One judge covers the east district and another covers the west.
↑ Back to the question list4. Where do I post bond money for Attala County?
Posted security is held by the clerk. The circuit clerk is in the courthouse, 100 Courthouse, Suite 1, 662-289-1471. The Justice Court is on Highway 12 West.
Call both offices to learn which one holds the bond in your case and what forms of payment it takes. Keep a receipt with the case number.
↑ Back to the question list5. What will a judge likely set for a first-time charge?
Mississippi has no single state schedule, and the judge picks the number. The guide in Rule 8.2(c) gives these ranges, which a judge may go above or below: a misdemeanor with a 6-month maximum, $250 to $1,000; a fine-only misdemeanor, $50 up to the maximum fine and costs; drug distribution, $5,000 to $1,000,000.
Your family member's real figure is on Attala County Inmate Search or from the Justice Court clerk.
↑ Back to the question list6. Does Mississippi let me post a smaller deposit?
Sometimes. The court rules define a cash deposit bond: 10 percent of the bond or $250, whichever is more, along with a sworn, notarized affidavit. A judge decides if it is allowed.
Ask the Justice Court at 662-289-7272. A bondsman's fee is a different thing and is not refunded.
↑ Back to the question list7. How much can a bondsman charge near Kosciusko?
State law limits the fee to 10 percent of the bond, with a $100 minimum, plus a processing fee. Capital charges and out-of-state defendants can reach 15 percent.
Bondsmen hold licenses from the Mississippi Insurance Department. Ask for the license number and who holds the collateral.
↑ Back to the question list8. Can we use property for the bond?
Yes, if a person who is not a bondsman owns Mississippi property worth the bond and signs a sworn statement. The statement also lists other bonds the signer has guaranteed.
Call the circuit clerk at 662-289-1471 with the property description and ask what the clerk requires.
↑ Back to the question list9. Can the sheriff lower the bond?
The sheriff can set bail on a misdemeanor arrest only if no judge has. For a felony he may do so only in an emergency. After a judge sets it, only a judge can change it.
Ask for a hearing through a lawyer. State law bars justice court judges from setting bail only to detain a person.
↑ Back to the question list10. Why is the booking marked as a hold?
On a capital charge, bail can be refused. Someone already on a felony bond who is arrested on a new felony with a sentence over five years may have all bonds revoked.
Domestic violence arrests need a judge before any bail. Probation and parole holds are separate. The sheriff's desk can read you the hold.
↑ Back to the question list11. Who handles teenagers in Attala County?
Youth Court is at 230 West Washington Street, Kosciusko, phone 662-289-2921. Two youth court judges and a special master sit there.
Youth records are private. The state youth defense office, 601-576-4206, helps families find a youth defender.
↑ Back to the question list12. Can we get a free lawyer?
Ask the judge at the first hearing. The rules require appointed counsel for a person who cannot pay and asks for one.
The circuit clerk, 662-289-1471, can say who accepts appointments in Attala County.
↑ Back to the question list13. What happens if my person skips court?
A judge may forfeit the bond and send out a warrant. A bondsman may surrender the person to the jail.
A refund of forfeited bail can follow if the person is returned within 18 months, less costs.
↑ Back to the question list14. How do I get my money back?
When the case ends, the court cancels the bond and returns security held by the clerk, minus fines and costs. The bondsman's fee is gone.
Save receipts and ask the circuit clerk to confirm the release.
↑ Back to the question list15. Which calls could be a scam?
Anyone demanding gift cards, crypto, or a wire to a private person is not a court. Jail account deposits are not bail.
Call the sheriff at 662-289-5556 to verify.
↑ Back to the question list16. What rules might a judge attach to my relative's release?
Every release carries four basics: show up for court, commit no crime, tell the court about a new address, and meet with the lawyer. A judge may add more, such as a curfew, drug testing, staying away from a named person, or a monitor.
Ask the judge or clerk for the order in writing. Break a rule and the court can hold a hearing to change or end the release.
↑ Back to the question list17. Can the bondsman send my relative back to the Kosciusko jail?
Yes. A licensed agent may arrest the person or ask an officer to do it, and then surrender the person at the jail. Doing so within the time the law allows ends the agent's duty on that bond.
If you co-signed, ask what that does to the fee and the collateral before you agree to anything.
↑ Back to the question list18. What does a preliminary hearing do?
On a felony, the person can ask for a hearing in which a judge decides whether there is enough evidence to continue. By rule it should start within 14 days of the request, or the person is to be released on recognizance if the offense allows bail.
Ask the Justice Court clerk, 662-289-7272, how to make the request.
