Capital District Juvenile Secure Detention Facility

Under the administration of the CDYCI the Captial District Juvenile Secure Detention Facility is a regional detention center for juveniles. In 2018 it was adapted to create an environment and design that is reminiscent of a school or a home, a change from its design similar to an adult jail. This has been shown to reduce recidivism and improve the mental health of the juveniles, while also diverting them from detention into alternative programs. At the same time improved security measures were put in place, with an upgraded system and improved procedures. With a goal of rehabilitation and diversion, the detention center offers short term detention only to youth who are under the age of 18, which was altered in 2018 and 2019 to no longer try those who are 16 or 17 as adults. In addition to Albany County, the facility is accessed by Schenectady, Saratoga, and Rensselaer Counties. Most of the juveniles are being held until their court dates occur or are serving sentences that are under one year in length, with those who are serving longer sentences being transferred to local facilities that offer long term programming. Mail: 838 Albany Shaker Rd, Loudonville, NY 12211 All mail is through the postal system, with a full return address, and may be checked for contraband with the resident before it is released.
