About the Steuben County Jail

Steuben County Jail falls under the operational responsibility of the local sheriff, and has since it’s completion. It is located within the Public Safety Building that also holds the sheriff office and other law enforcement related agencies. Using a direct supervision model to maintain order within the jail has officers working within the housing units directly and interacting with inmates. There are seven housing units in this location and a total capacity of 262 offenders who are either pretrial or waiting for their sentencing. Holding both male and female inmates, there are 6 housing units for adult males and 1 for females, and 48 of the spaces are for medium security and designed as a dormitory setting. This facility runs both a community work program that allows inmates to complete tasks in the community to assist nonprofits or other groups to maintain their spaces and finish community projects, and a garden that provides produce to the jail itself and to the local food bank.

Visitation: Visits are permitted on Saturday and Sundy and must be scheduled in advance at least one full day. All visitors must be approved before they are permitted to visit and will be emailed a time if they have been approved. Visit times depend upon the housing until and beginning at 7:45am and end by 10:45pm.

Mail can be received every day and is processed and passed to the inmates quickly, however the jail also uses a digital service to avoid contraband entering the facility. Friends and family of inmates in the Steuben County Jail can arrange to visit inmates by video, both at the jail and remotely from home. They can also send them money and buy them commissary online, and set up a phone account that allows the inmates to call them during the day and evening seven days a week.

All the information on these inmate services can be found in the sections below.  If you still have questions, you can phone the jail 24 hours a day by calling 607-622-3913.

Recent Bookings & Arrests

What is the booking process for the Steuben County Jail?

After being arrested, the offender is brought to the Steuben County Jail for booking, which is the detailed process of identifying, classifying, deciding on charges, and whether the person will either be released on their own recognizance, allowed to be released on bail, or moved into the jail until their court date.

The first thing every newly arrested person must do is close their mouth. Everything an offender says may be used against them, so the best thing to do is remain silent when questioned about the arrest and what led to it.

These are the steps of booking someone into the Steuben County Jail:

  • Personal identification.
  • Mugshot(s).
  • Questions about medical history, mental health, drug and alcohol use, and gang affiliations.
  • Possible DNA.
  • Full body search.
  • Property forfeiture.
  • Free phone call.

If you have any questions about when you can pay an offender's bond and what the cost will be, call the facility at 607-622-3913.

Inmate Bail and Bonding

How do you pay bail for someone who has been arrested in Steuben County?

When an offender is arrested and brought to the Steuben County Jail in Bath for booking, there are several outcomes after being processed.

1. The offender will be released with no bail, promising to return on a specific date to appear before a judge in either Municipal or Steuben County Court.
2. The offender is ordered to remain in jail until their court date.
3. The offender is allowed to be released after paying a specified bond or bail.  Call 607-622-3913 to get the exact amount.

The payment of an offender's bail or bond can take many shapes.

  • A cash bond is paid in full at the jail's bonding window or the clerk of court, usually by cash, cashier's check or money order, and many jails also take debit or credit cards through a lobby kiosk or an online bond vendor for an added fee; bring the inmate's full name and booking number, and the jail's number is 607-622-3913.
  • It can be paid using a bail company, licensed to do business in Steuben County.
  • Many courts accept land or a home as bond collateral; the owner shows clear title and equity of at least the bond amount, often double, using a deed and a recent tax or appraisal value, and the court that set bail approves the property.
