About the Tompkins County Jail

As the largest division of the Tompkins County Sheriff's Department, the jail maintains a staff of 40. There are several services available for this 90-bed facility including all meals, mental health care, medical care, dental repairs, probation services, transition services, wellness recovery, a college program, OSHA training and a garden program that allows inmates to grow a garden that supplies food to the facility. With a focus on cleanliness, sanitation, safety, and security, each officer is highly trained and continues to receive training on an ongoing basis. Inmates are encouraged to maintain contact with their friends and family through mail, phone calls, and visits, and they are also provided with the opportunity to order necessary items from the commissary.

The Tompkins County Jail was built in 1986 and given its age, it is in poor condition, and far too small for its needs. As far back as twentty years ago, it was suggested by consultants to build a jail 2x its current size of 90 beds. They probably need a jail of at least 400 beds by this point and time.  Much of their annual expense is spent transporting offenders to and fron other jails in upstate New York.
