The North Carolina Department of Public Safety operates ten juvenile detention centers including the Alexander Juvenile Detention Center which has 24 beds. These are secure facilities that are intended to protect the safety and security of the residents, the community, and all staff members. Each of these are for temporary holding only and do not maintain any long term detention but house those juveniles who are waiting for their court appearance or are waiting to be placed into a facility at the end of their hearing. Before any detention occurs, the alternatives and diversions are attempted, and while a youth is being held, they will attend frequency court dates to determine if they need to remain in the facility, to address and consider alternatives, or to make other housing arrangements. Upon arrival each will receive a full assessment to determine their educational needs, mental health screening and supports, substance abuse assessments, and medical screening. After the assessment the necessary services are provided quickly, and any needed medical attention is addressed immediately. Once they have been admitted programs are in place to ensure that ongoing education is provided to mirror local schools, medical care is provided in emergency and ongoing situations, and mental health care is provided along with any addictions treatments or other treatments that are necessary.
