Stark County bail and bond: the Dickinson regional jail and the court paperwork it waits for
Stark County has no jail of its own. Adults arrested here are held at the Dickinson Adult Detention Center, 66 Museum Drive, Dickinson, the regional jail for the southwest corner of the state. To see whether a person is inside, use Stark County Inmate Search. The coordinator at 701-456-7790 answers bond procedure questions. Court paperwork must reach the jail before any bond is taken, so allow time after a hearing.
Is my person being held at the Dickinson jail?
Search the name with Stark County Inmate Search. Stark County does not run a jail of its own, so the person sits in the regional facility in Dickinson, the Southwest Multi-County Correctional Center. If the search shows nothing yet, the coordinator's line at 701-456-7790 answers questions the search cannot.
Where exactly is the jail, and who runs it?
The Dickinson Adult Detention Center is at 66 Museum Drive, Dickinson, ND. A board of several southwest counties runs it. Besides Stark, it houses people for Billings, Bowman, Dunn, Golden Valley, Hettinger, and Slope counties, and it books arrests for the Dickinson Police Department. The lobby is watched 24 hours a day.
Who handles bonding there?
The same facility takes care of booking, processing, and bonding or bail for Dickinson police arrests. Call 701-456-7790 to ask how bail works for the person you are helping. Court paperwork has to be signed and received from the courthouse before a bond can be taken or a person let go, so a payment alone does not open the door.
How long after a hearing can bail be paid?
Wait at least two hours after court ends before asking about the result. The jail needs the paperwork first. District court hearings for people in custody are held in Mountain Time on Monday at 1:30 p.m., Wednesday at 10:30 a.m., and Friday at 10:00 a.m.
What if a Dickinson city charge brought the arrest?
Dickinson Municipal Court at 38 1st Street West holds bond hearings daily, by video, as needed. Times change, so call 701-456-7770. Release is not guaranteed after a hearing. Missing an arraignment, pretrial conference, status conference, or bench trial costs the posted bond and brings a warrant.
Which courthouse handles a county case?
The Stark County Courthouse is at 51 3rd Street East, Dickinson, ND 58601. The clerk of district court answers at 701-227-3184; counter hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mountain Time, Monday through Thursday, and the clerk can confirm Friday hours. Ask for the case number and the next hearing.
What does the Sheriff's Office do?
Sheriff Corey Lee's office is at 51 3rd Street East, 701-456-7610. Deputies make arrests across the county, and the office has a court holding area built for one person. Bail for a county case is paid to the court, and the sheriff cannot change the amount.
Can someone leave jail without posting money?
Yes, some do. Rule 46 starts with a promise to appear or an unsecured bond. In the southwest judicial district, a pretrial program has run since fall 2021, and the jail accepts it in place of bond. Referrals come through the county state's attorney, and participants need a place to live, a job, and any treatment that is recommended. After release they wear GPS and check in daily with a coordinator.
What amount will the judge pick?
North Dakota has no statewide table of dollar bails. Administrative Rule 63 guides pre-appearance release decisions and has no amounts in it. The judge decides at the first appearance, using the factors in Rule 46: the offense, the evidence, family ties, work, money, record, and danger to others. The booking record shows the amount once it is set.
Why might the jail refuse to let someone go?
Rule 63 allows a hold until a judge sees the person for a Class AA to C felony, for a warrant that already sets bond terms, for failing to appear, and for certain misdemeanors such as domestic violence. Ask at 701-456-7790 which of these applies.
How do bail agents fit in?
Only agents licensed under chapter 26.1-26.6 of the Century Code may write bail bonds. The Insurance Department, 701-328-2440, handles licensing and complaints. Get the fee and any collateral terms in writing. Staff at the jail do not recommend a company.
Can I put up a house, land, or a vehicle?
Under Rule 46 a surety must describe the property and file a declaration of adequate assets, and the court has to approve the bond. The clerk at 701-227-3184 can say what the judge wants. Property bonds take time, so ask on the first day.
Who defends someone in Dickinson who cannot pay?
The state's indigent defense commission has a public defender office at 135 Sims Street, Suite 221, Dickinson, 701-227-7460. The main office is 701-845-8632. Request appointed counsel when the judge first sees the person.
Where do Stark County juveniles go?
Call the Sheriff's Office at 701-456-7610 or the clerk at 701-227-3184 for the place and time of a juvenile hearing. Juvenile cases are kept private, so the adult search does not show them. The state Commission also handles juvenile defense at 701-845-8632.
What if the person skips a southwest-district hearing?
The court must declare the bail forfeited under Rule 46(f). After the clerk sends notice, the surety has 90 days to pay or ask the court to set the order aside. Handing the defendant back, or depositing the full bond amount, ends the surety's duty.
Does the person who paid get a refund?
No. Posted bail counts as the defendant's property. The judge may apply it to fines, costs, or restitution, and the rest goes to the defendant. An agent's fee is not refunded.
What payment scams should I watch for?
No office takes gift cards or app transfers to a private person. Call 701-456-7790 or the clerk at 701-227-3184 yourself, using the numbers on this page.
